I am coming to New York early September, and I am debating a few shows to see. I currently have tickets to Aladdin, which is what my girlfriend wants to see. I have time to see three other shows. I have seen the Book of Mormon, Fiddler on the Roof, Finding Neverland, Fun Home, Hamilton, Les Mis, Lion King, Phantom, Something Rotten, and Wicked. I have no desire to see an American in Paris, Beautiful, Cats, Chicago, or Motown. I am really debating between (1) On Your Feet, Matilda, Waitress, School of Rock, and Kinky Boots (Two Shows out of these five); (2) The Humans or An Act of God (1 Show). I am kind of intrigued about seeing An Act of God on the final performance. What would you all recommend? And what shows could I get on TDF, if I decided to wait to purchase tickets. THANKS

I know these 2 aren't on your list, but they should be, in my opinion: Fun Home is the 2nd best (by a very close margin) show on Broadway, and it should not be missed, but it closes on September 10. Also, The Color Purple includes the best single performance on Broadway at this moment, as well as a great ensemble, and also should not be missed.

I vote The Humans and Waitress for sure. School of Rock is FUN, but it didn't really AMAZE me or touch me like Waitress did. And Kinky Boots is good, but energy has definitely gone down since the original cast... And Fun Home is great but kind of low energy. Really depends on the kind of show you feel like, but I feel like Waitress is a must-see. Matilda is great for kids... And On Your Feet! is super high fun energy with the whole cool Hispanic feel, but plot is kind of weak. If it was me I'd go with The Humans, Waitress, and either On Your Feet! Or School of Rock

You absolutely should see Kinky Boots! It's honestly the best of those you mentioned.

I have already seen Fun Home, and I really wasn't looking at the Color Purple. My pick was Waitress, but I also want to give my girlfriend a fun energetic show that she would enjoy. I am thinking On Your Feet, but I'm not sure if I should get tickets now or try and get them on TDF. Or if that is really the show we should see! My big debate though is between An Act of God or The Humans... I have no idea!

Oh yeah and Idk if you are considering the new shows coming in also- like Holiday Inn, The Encounter, Cherry Orchard etc.

Waitress is pretty high energy, funny, and heartwarming as well. Keala Settle is hysterical in it, couldn't get enough of her.

On Your Feet! is more enjoyable than you would expect.

Of your listed options, School of Rock is the only one I've seen, but it warmed my chilly, child-averse heart and it is a nice 2.5 hours out.

Although you were not planning to see The Color Purple, I'd like to suggest you make it a priority to see! I've seen many of the shows you've mentioned, and it rivals most of them. Cynthia ' s performance is legendary. The ensemble is incredibly strong. The show is an electric experience.

I would go with Waitress and Matilda out of your musical choices. Like others have said, it's a very heart-warming, funny, at times high-energy story and I think your girlfriend will enjoy it. I myself loved it and can't stop listening to the cast recording now.

Matilda is in my eyes superior to School of Rock, just based on the source material alone (one is based on a Roald Dahl novel, the other on a comedy movie). Both have cute, talented kids, but I just think Matilda has the stronger story, and I personally liked the music better (I wasn't originally interested in seeing it but changed my mind after listening to the cast recording and falling in love with the music and the clever, intricate lyrics). School of Rock is fun, but not much more. Matilda is also fun, but also has some depth to the story.

Definitely see Waitress though!



I think if you're already not very interested in Color Purple isn't fair enough for you not to see it. It all comes down to interest and taste... and mood even, so don't see a show you're not interested in just because people tell you it's a must see. Doesn't mean you're gonna enjoy it. I liked it fine, and I did cry at the end, but I still found it hard to relate and it didn't speak to me as much as some other things did (and didn't care for the music much either). Because I lived in NY for a while I made a point to go out of my comfort zone or whatever and see everything, whether I was terribly interested in it or not. Sometimes you discover something you love (that happened with Violet for example), but more often than not those you were most excited about are the ones you end up enjoying the most! At least in my experience. So just stick with your gut :)

My choice, by a very small margin, is Fun Home. There's not a bad seat in that theater. Also, you'll never have another chance to see it in this venue, and with this incredible cast. You really can't go wrong with either choice, but one day you'll regret missing Fun Home (in my opinion).
