They all have their moments - unfortunately, that is all some have:
Jersey Boys - not seen
Rent - love the music
Wicked - surprised me and that is truely something - very enjoyable.
Phantom - I've never stayed awake for an entire performance.
The Producers - Wish I'd seen the OBC - love the movie.
Spamalot - love the album
Cats - Memory is one of the great moments in musical theatre - other than that, well, zzzzzzzz.
Miss Saigon (the only one I despise) - I cried, my boss cried, my partner cried and my bosses wife had to distribute tissues.
Les Miz - I've seen this I think 6 times. Hits me emotionally.
A Chorus Line - The best of this lot, certainly. Arguably the best theatrical experience I've ever had.
Never seen Cats, but it just sounds sooo stupid to me. The least they could have done to make a stupid musical about cats with no plot good would have been to make really cool lifelike costumes. But the costumes are just black leotards with lots of fur and face paint. I realize that it did come out in the early 80s, but I still dont see what all the hype was about.
Also, I can't stand Grease. It's just too corny for me. I dont know, I've just had a prejudice against it since forever. I can't stand the happy ending, and the music as well.
I can't stand "Cats," and though I've never seen "Jersey Boys," I've never been a fan of jukebox musicals, so I'm guessing I wouldn't be too fond of it.
The rest I like. Phantom, I adore.
About the MISS SAIGON title issue.
why is the show called MISS SAIGON if Kim doesn't even Win the contest?
it was always quite clear to me (and i hope it IS the right explanation), that although Gigi is the actuall winner of the contest, Kim was the one who was REALLY winning there. KIM is the true winner of the evening, and later in the wedding sequence (dju vui vai), the girls call HER miss saigon. she got the much-craved american-lover (which was the REAL prize of the contest)
I find the title really beutiful.
AudreyTwoTwo --- I know you're young, and I know this is harsh, but... Sounds like your parents are idiots. They've taught you to waste your time and energy on things you don't like by summing them up in a fast and incorrect way, instead of encouraging you to find the things you DO like and figuring out why you like them.
It's a very bad behavior/habit they're showing you by example... not to mention completely irritating... and I hope you can break free of it... soon.
I didn't say I hated it.
Did i?
It was late, I am bit delirious.
My parents dont usually do that, it was really my MOM, my dad was just upset that she didnt like it. I don't know what he personally thought.
My mom's favorite show is Wicked. Mine is definitely not, not that I don't like it, but I like other stuff better. Such as The Woman In White. I loved it, and then it closed like two weeks later.
GRR.
Has anyone seen Tarzan? I thought it was OK. But everyone practically hates it. Why?
I have never seen it, but something about the concept of Jersey Boys really irks me. I mean, yes, their voices are powerful (judging by the OBCR) and I'm sure the acting is good. But we've already pretty much heard their voices before (via the original Four Seasons). I'd much rather hear new voices and new music than listen to very similar voices and older music.

"I don't really hate any of these (except Miss Saigon--- you DONT THROW CHILDREN ACROSS THE STAGE.), I am just curious."
"ACTUALLY, I never saw the thing."
"I probably would sit and watch it, but, as of now, I don't like it so much. Despise is just a bit of an exaggeration lol"
"I dont like the action performed. In which case, I shall close my eyes everytime the kid steps on stage."
Audrey, dear, you really should be more consistent in your posts. Okay, I gather from your most recent post that you don't hate MISS SAIGON after all. However, have you even seen it? Judging from your previous posts, I can't tell.

She hasn't seen it, but is basing her opinion (i.e., not liking the "action performed") on what her mother told her.

I agree on Phantom. The book is just boring (not the novel though, even though it's not too great either). And what bothers me is why did they play down the mask and the revelation of the disfigurement. I think the audience needs the jolt of a chilling face behind the mask. It would, at least, seem more tragic.
hmm. i don't really hate any of those...
the producers is kinda weird...

"it's not funny lol"? That makes no sense.
Honestly, I HATE when people stick lol after every sentence they type. It makes them look... well, everyone sees how it makes them look.
Anyways, I DON'T hate those shows for the most part, but I resent some of them a little bit; spectacle does not substance make. The Producers and Spamalot, for instance, robbed other shows of well-deserved Tony Awards for no reason other than that they are...well, huge shows.

phantom
it was boring and very very confusing
half the people around me were snoring
so was my family
i was feeling a bit drowsy too
it was boring and un entertaining
Jersey Boys - I hate juke box musicals, I always will.
Rent - Don't hate it, I think it's over rated though.
Wicked - Don't hate it, don't like it. I never got into it. Over rated comment again. I also hate people who only know Rent and Wicked and claim that they're really into Musical Theatre, there is so much more!
Phantom - Webber is nothing without Rice, I haven't liked any of his works after they stopped working together. He writes 3 songs and not only uses them 14 times each in one musical, there in his other musicals... it bothers me.
The Producers - I don't know much about this, I've only heard bits of it, I didn't like because it seems like the two main characters are both completely insane, and you can't get any story off of that... but I can't judge.
Spamalot - I have no problem.
Cats - I will never understand it, Cats? Dancing and sing cats? WTF?
Miss Saigon - I like Miss Saigon.
Les Miz - I love Les Miz.
A Chorus Line - Only a few songs I like from ACL, but I don't hate it.
I'm not the biggest "The Producers" fan. I really don't like the characters, and the music is nothing to praise, but I can't really hate any type of musical theater. I try to give it all a chance.

Jersey Boys - enjoyable, but WAY overrated. Seriously, I don't get it one bit.
Rent - it's had its impact. Many were offended by it, many love it.
Wicked - not perfect but it has brought a new wave to the theatre.
Phantom - many people's first musical; people I know who hate musicals like Phantom...so, who know?
The Producers - I enjoy it, nice to go back to the old style musical comedies. Past its prime now.
Spamalot - OVERRATED. Seriously, the movie was cheaper.
Cats - I enjoy it. Many tourists loved it.
Miss Saigon - seems like the smaller of the Big Three (Les Mis, Phantom, Miss Saigon (not in order))
Les Miz - my first show, love it.
A Chorus Line - finally saw a production of it and loved it.
So, no. I don't love all those shows. I love maybe two of them.
I don't like many of those shows you listed. Despise? Maybe Cats and Phantom. I don't want to hurl myself into a wall after seeing the other few, and I actually thought that the Producers is occationally cute.
Bal, I DON'T UNDERSTAND IT. Why is saying something made you laugh out loud becoming interchangable with a period? Le sigh.
Jersey Boys- I enjoyed it throughly, but I grew up listened to Frankie Valli. The entire cast was incredible and I feel it's the best of the jukebox musicals because the book is solid.
Rent- I love it. I love the music and the book and it's heart. I do believe that the quality of the cast makes or breaks it for the audience.
Wicked- I have mixed feelings. Some parts I love, some I don't. I feel like the entire second act needs work.
Phantom- I love it for sentimental reasons. I think most people from my generation were introduced to musical theatre through the works Andrew Lloyd Webber, and I was no expection.
The Producers- At the time it opened, it was one of my favourite movies put onstage starring two of my favourite actors. It's my guilty pleasure favourite, but I do think that the movie was subpar and the show has never been as great as it was with Nathan and Matthew.
Spamalot- I'm a mega-Monty Python fan and love Holy Grail. It's not high art, but it's great fun.
Cats- First Broadway show I ever saw and the one that convinced me that my calling was to be an actress. If you were seven and sitting in the front row and had never been to the theatre before, you would have loved it too.
Miss Saigon- I liked it, I thought it was a very clever way of updating Madame Butterfly and connected with the love story even through all the crazy special effects
Les Miz- like they say in Forbidden Broadway, you "better read the synopsis at the end of the play" but despite having one of the more intricate books of a musical, it's still a very powerful piece of theatre.
A Chorus Line- Revolutionary, up there with West Side Story and Gypsy as one of the best pieces ever written for musical theatre.

Does anyone really hate any of the following shows:
Jersey Boys

The Producers

Cats
Miss Saigon (the only one I despise)
Les Miz
A Chorus Line

Yes.
No one cares about your mother. You are not a better theatre-enthusiast because your favorite show isn't Wicked. Go away.
I have always wondered...
...why some people can't put a whole subject in the subject line.

I don't like Rent or Miss Saigon because there are no roles for me.
