110 in the Shade, which unfortunately opened the same season as Hello Dolly and Funny Girl and got lost in the process.
She Loves Me -- the original production.
Anyone Can Whistle, which, had it been allowed to, could have found its own devoted audience.
Ben Franklin in Paris, which closed because of the critics' own ignorance of US history.
I know Matt, I just wish they'd been around longer (or in the case of Aida, wouldn't close so soon).
And I could kick myself for forgetting The Normal Heart. THAT wasn't fair.

Forgive me first for being both redundant and predictable!

Les Miz- it should run as long as Phantom
Assassins
Ragtime (what a great show and fabulous OBC)
The Normal Heart - I was devestated when it closed prematurely.
Les Miserables - Sure it ran 16 years, but it's a seminal classic, and the best of the Big 4 (Cats, Les Miz, Phantom, Miss Saigon). I had hoped it would surpass Cats, and by some miracle outlive Phantom.

Despite the topic line, the question is which shows closed early and didn't have a chance to build an audience. I liked Les Mis, but it hardly qualifies just because it didn't go as long as Cats. If musicals' runs were in proportion to their quality, the original run of Sweeney Todd would still be going. :) Urinetown, on the other hand, had other circumstances contribute to its closing.
And thinking about Assassins and The Normal Heart just depresses me.

What were the circumstances for Urinetown closing? I totally missed the whole closing of that show. I had seen in last year with Carolee Carmello as Ms. Pennyswise, and then I went back a few months later and it had closed. I never even got the news that it was closing.

Duely noted. Yeah, I forgot about that.
In that case, I nominate MARTIN GUERRE. This troubled production kept running into bad luck; I had hoped the developmental tour would make its way to Broadway, but all the Broadway theatres were booked solid that year, so the tour just fizzled out and died. It wasn't as good as Les Miz or Miss Saigon, but it was still a great musical. Needed some work, but there was golden material there. It would have been ideal off-Broadway.

I forgot about Martin Guerre! That is definitely one, in my opinion. It had its similarities to Les Miz and Miss Saigon, but it was also very different. It's too bad it didn't get a longer run. How long WAS the run? I know it was extremely short...at least, if I'm remembering correctly...
PARADE ran too long! THE CIVIL WAR needed to run longer.
