I loved the way Peter & the Starcatcher was staged! Are there any other shows that use this similar "poor theatre" like staging?
Well, STARCATCHER owes a huge debt to NICHOLAS NICKLEBY.
Don't forget "The 39 Steps" which opened less than 5 years ago. It ran nearly 2 years and the longest running play in nearly a decade. This is even more remarkable since it opened the same season as the juggernaut God of Carnage and ran longer too.
Maybe The Fantasticks?
Our Town is a pretty good example.
War Horse has a similair "Story theater" or "Poor Theater" aesthetic. So did "Brief Encounter" a few years back. I LOVE this ****.
SHIPWRECKED, by Donald Margulies. The production at 59E59 a few years back was just as enchanting as PETER..., and far less elaborate. Three actors playing multiple characters, lots of props and sound effects ( most of them created by the actors ) and mesmerizing story telling.
Thanks, sounds great!
Godspell
Stones In His Pockets
Greater Tuna
The Mystery of Irma Vep
Productions of EQUUS use the technique to varying degrees.
PigPen's "The Old Man and the Old Moon" at Gym at Judson absolutely reminded me of Peter and the Starcatcher. You can see in the production shots that they've made their props out of found objects like cartons and kitchen supplies.
