You know the deal. You pay good money to see a show and leave the theater thinking, "Ehhh". But after time passes you realize how good the show is.
When I saw the Nine revival I wasn't overly impressed but I bought the cast recording and absolutely fell in love with the music.
Chicago grew on me over time was well, as did Bat Boy.

A while ago, I was able to see a production of Cats at a theatre not far from where I live (it was a professional theatre...not some kid-production one). When I saw it, I could not stand it. I thought it was really dumb, and throughout the whole thing, I kept waiting for the plot to come in--and it never did. However, a couple months after that, I saw the movie version, and fell in love with it. I think after my initial shock that there wasn't a plot was over, I was able to focus much more on the dancing, music, etc., and it became my favorite musical. It was the first musical that I really became obsessed with, and what led to my love for broadway musicals in general.
I also was kind of freaked out by Rent, and didn't like it a lot at first.
I saw Rent in 1994 and absolutely hated it, but of course being 9 years old at the time might have had something to do with it
It took me a long time to want to actually see it again but I fortunately saw it last year and have grown to like it now.
Little Women...absolutely hated it the first time, but when I have it a second chance, I enjoyed myself.

Company. I disliked it for two reasons: 1) I saw two lousy productions of Company years ago 2) I think I can relate more to Bobby now then when I previously saw Company. I was 18 and 21 years old on the previous two productions and couldn't relate. After seeing the great production in Cincinatti last weekend I have changed my mind and now love the show.
I fell asleep years ago during Into The Woods. I have seen it twice since then and liked it a lot more. It is still my least favorite Sondheim score but I do like it.
I despised The Secret Garden when I saw it. I was bored out of my mind. However, I was young (early teens), and I have recently started listening to the music again. I hope to have a chance to see it again sometime to see if my opinion has changed.
I also disliked Secret Garden. I barely made it through the first act when I saw the Bway production. Everyone around me seemed to be enjoying themselves and I just couldn't get into it. I will have to get the CD and give it a spin.
Phantom of the Opera. I saw it many years ago and just hated it. Maybe i was too young. Anywho, over my christmas break I started listening to the recording and I fell in love with certain songs.

COMPANY. I saw the original Broadway production when I was just 13, and just didn't have the life experience to get it.
CHICAGO. The original Broadway production just left me cold. I saw the production again on tour (actually in Chicago!) and Gwen and Chita had just joined the troubled tour to make sure it got to LA, saw it from the fifth row, and was absolutely dazzled.
CABARET (the film). I just couldn't get over how it was so different than the Broadway show, whose score I loved. Took me a number of viewings to appreciate it on its own terms.

When I did "The Sound Of Music" at high school, my first thoughts were "I DON'T WANT TO DO THIS I AM SO SICK OF THIS SHOW AFTER HEARING IT SO MANY TIMES I DON'T WANNA DO IT AND" stuff like that. But then I played for the songs with this UNBELIEVABLE CAST of 28, I couldn't believe myself. That, I think, will be the ONLY time I will ever adore that show.
carousel- asm'd it in college, hated it, but now is my favorite R & H show.

I had an opposite experience: Cats. I thought I loved it when I was little, and now...I realize I don't. Same with Sweeney Todd, well, hopefully. *please don't kill me for this guys* I saw Sweeney in December, and to tell you the truth, I wasn't that crazy about it. As time goes on, I like it more, but not as much as when you all rave about it. Everytime I see a post from a major Sweeney lover, I think, "Am I missing something?" Maybe I didn't let it sink in, I was sick the day I saw it. So I don't know, maybe I'll just see it again *jumps at the chance to see another Broadway show, no matter what it is!* :)
A New Brain. But I think I was too young to appreciate it at the time.

Rent. When I first saw it I couldn't understand what was going on and I thought it was too loud. The only thing I got out of it was a headache. I left the theatre thinking "well, there's one musical I'll never see again."
But... I'd been given the cast recording for my birthday so I figured I might as well listen to it, otherwise it'd be a waste of money. And it grew on me, to the point where I've seen the show multiple times and am a total Renthead.
