Has anyone noticed that in "Story of my life" the line "Mammas in the mud mammas in distress" sounds like it came out of Rose's Turn? (Melody wise, but I suppose the structure of the phrase too).
Do you think it was intentional? Well I'm not sure if it would add ANYTHING to the show if it was, but It seems a bit close to be unintentional. I'm not sure.

you are correct
plus, they reference Wicked in a different song, so I think it was probably intentional

Posted: 6/11/09 at 1:44amThey reference Wicked at the end of "What's Up Duloc." It was performed at the Tony's. They also reference The Lion King and Chicago, and I'm sure there's more I can't remember right now, so it's definately intentional.

"Did you watch the tony's? "
No, though I did watch the Shrek performance on YouTube (among others), and I did notice this. But is this in the actual show? It's not on the recording.

Posted: 6/11/09 at 2:11amIt's not on the recording because I guess they wanted to save some laughs for the actual performance.

Posted: 6/11/09 at 2:25amI remember the Lion King, Gypsy and Wicked references, but what was the Chicago one?
#9re: Shrek Gypsy reference?
Posted: 6/11/09 at 2:36amThe Chicago reference is in Morning Person with the Rats.

I love Morning Person and still don't get it. Was it the dancing, because I sort of remember some moves that you might be able to associate with Chicago-style dancing. Perhaps I simply forgot what I saw. Or maybe I am just tired. Or both. Can you elaborate?

Posted: 6/11/09 at 3:08amWhat's with the flag during "Freak Flag" on the Tonys? Was that supposed to be a Les Miz gag? I don't remember them doing that in the actual show.

Posted: 6/11/09 at 3:33amThere is a section of Morning Person that is a take off of the Rich Man's Frug from Sweet Charity. Another reference in that song is to 42nd Street, with the curtain and the tap shoes/rats.

One bit of staging in Story of My Life is a reference to A Chorus Line. . .all the fairy tale characters walk downstage during a vamp, and hit individual poses.

In reference to the Wicked take off:
My kids, 8 & 12, had seen Wicked the day before we endured Shrek. At the end of the Duloc song, my 8 yo turned to me, all ecxxited, and said, Mom...they stole that from Wicked....can they DO that?
Priceless.
#15re: Shrek Gypsy reference?
Posted: 6/11/09 at 9:14amthere's also a chorus line reference in "what's up duloc" when they say somemthing about "something something razamataz, he's trained in ballet, flamenco and jazz." it's a reference to the quick paced melody in "one." also, the way they say "jazz" is making fun of "all that jazz" in chicago.

Posted: 6/11/09 at 3:32pmFunny that Shrek got away with the "Gypsy" joke. Mel Brooks was forced to remove an almost-identical joke from The Producers- its presence is the sole difference in the widely-circulated "Producers Workshop/Preview Score" when compared to the finished Broadway/MTI score.

qolbinau: The Wicked reference isn't in the Cast Recording because in the actual show, it isn't heard until the Encore/Playoff of "What's Up Duloc?"
The cast recording omits the encore, though they used the encore ending for the Tonys.
