#1Shrek Worth Seeing?
Posted: 3/31/09 at 9:27amComing to NYC Memorial Day weekend. Planning on seeing 9to5, West Side Story and Hair. Is Shrek worth seeing for Sunday night? I have no interest in Rock of Ages and have seen the other productions who offer a second performance on Sunday. Of course, I would only go if I can win the lottery. Also are all main cast members in second performance? Thanks for the help.

Posted: 3/31/09 at 9:32amDoesn't HAIR have a Sunday evening show too? You could see HAIR on Sunday night and then see another show in the afternoon. If you already have tickets for HAIR though, and you need to fill a Sunday night slot, maybe try NEXT TO NORMAL?

Posted: 3/31/09 at 9:49amShrek is A LOT of fun, but a lot of people on this board don't care for it. It is VERY similar to the movie (the script, tone, and set). I love Shrek, and you would have an easier (and cheaper!) time getting tickets.

Don't waste you time, rent the movie, save yourself the money.
It's a bore. everyone involved can and has done MUCH better work.

Posted: 3/31/09 at 10:44amI actually enjoyed Shrek a good deal and I'm not afraid to admit it. I expected to not enjoy the show itself, but enjoy the tech, so I was truly pleasantly surprised. It isn't a masterpiece, but was definitely fun and even touching in a couple of places (I found "Who'd I Be?" very effective).

Posted: 3/31/09 at 10:47amIf you can make it to the lotto, I'd go for it (I think it's not the hardest lotto to win due to how early it is). I wasn't expecting much, but the level of talent involved is phenomenal and I was surprised by the number of real, honest, beautiful theatrical moments. There's real heart beneath the amazing technical elements.

Although I am making a return visit because my daughter's a diehard John Tartaglia fan and wants to see it, I'm personally not that thrilled about seeing it again.
The cast works so hard and is very good, but there are only two memorable songs and much of the show just kind of lays there. As a fan of the first two movies, I was suprised as how listless it is.

Posted: 3/31/09 at 3:16pmActually, I'm a member of Mensa, and yet, I found it totally enjoyable. That is why there is always more than one show to choose from. You don't like it, that's fine. Try not to denegrate everyone that doesn't agree with you. Now be nice and go play with your Nintendo games.

That is your OPINION, but I do not see why you are getting frustrated because people like it. I enjoyed it. The score was fun to listen to and it was an overall humorous, enjoyable show.
I think the original poster should see it and form his/her own opinion.

I agree that posts like this are not a good way to go....there are numerous threads about each show. Read the other opinions and determine if it sounds like something you WANT to see.
Just like everything else: we cannot judge what others will like or dilike. Even among my closest friends I am often agog at what they do or don't like.
I am bringing my kids to see this in a few weeks, but I have no desire to see it myself. I hope to be pleasantly entertained.

That one wasn't listed yet on Playbill's weekly schedule of shows. I'm basically looking for a discounted show to see or my alternative is to play bingo and drink beer at Splash.

Take your harsh critic hat off and enjoy the show. It's by no means perfect, but it's fun and quite enjoyable. However, heed this advice:
LOTTO WARNING: Winning the lotto is easy (when I went, everyone there got tickets). But some of the lotto seats are T-E-R-R-I-B-L-E. They say it is 'obstructed' view, but you can still see fine. NOT THE CASE. We were in the front row far right, and we were so close to the stage, we could only see from the chest up on the actors, and that was only if they were center or down stage. It honestly ruined the show. At intermission, we moved to vacant seats in second row center, and had a perfect view. But my parents didn't even realize Farquad was on his knees with short little legs until act II. Maybe the other lotto seats are better, but we would have rather payed full price for tickets and actually been able to enjoy the show than sit where we were.
