I am going to see Matilda at the Shubert Theater in New York and would like to purchase first row Mezzanine tickets, but want to make sure that the railing will not block my two children's views (8 and 10 years old)?
Absolutely no problem from those seats with the bar. I just find the stage feels far away for first row mezz but no problem otherwise.

Matilda - at the Shubert - is one of the few shows I prefer to see from the orchestra...and I usually get front mezz for everything. The actors use the aisles in the show and it's fun to be part of that.
(I wouldn't want to be far back in the orchestra because then you have the mezz blocking your view.)
The only advantage upstairs front row is the "no heads" in front of you...so if that's important to you, go for it. But I think orchestra and closer is the way to go (and I think is the same price as the front mezz).
Sat there for a painful second act for SPAMALOT years ago. Painful not because of the show, which I quite enjoyed, but from the lack of leg room in the front row mezz. Don't recall the railing being particularly problematic, but I'm tall.
Sat both in the balcony and side orchestr for the show. Both we're fine. When I saw it first from the balcony I was wishing I could be downstairs for what ever was happening but after sitting down there, I realized it wasn't much to be upset over missing. Plus I liked the view of the side boxes upstairs.
