Hollywood Reporter claiming "discussions are under way to take the production to London."

Why don't you go? Why don't you leave Manderley? He doesn't need you... he's got his memories. He doesn't love you, he wants to be alone again with her. You've nothing to stay for. You've nothing to live for really, have you?

This flopped yet Disney themed shows flourish for the most part. Today's theatergoer wants fluff and not substance.

All two of them? Yes, that MUST be the answer!

Yeah that's what they all say.

Two weeks ago I sat in the front row of the mezzanine and LOVED the show. The middle aged Long Island couple next to me seemed lukewarm at best, and at intermission the man turned to me and said "well, I sure wouldn't recommend this to anyone. I don't know anyone in it. Do you?" I think that is a bigger issue than the subject matter. Anyone who thinks celebrity casting isn't a big seller of tickets is really kidding themselves. I also heard someone on a plane yesterday say behind me "and we're seeing Bradley Cooper on Broadway". "What's he doing?". "I don't know the play, something about an elephant." Who cares what the play is, today many people go to see a person -- not a play!

Bingo

The dumbing down of Broadway. It has turned into a popularity contest.

Would the river even be produced without Jackman? Maybe the producers feel the only way to justify sky high prices is to put a Hollywood star in their show.

How has rush been? I'm thinking of stopping by the theater after work...

I am deeply saddened that this is closing... by far one of the best pieces to open (or revive) this season. I had never heard of it before this year, but have fallen in love with it and will see it as many times as possible.

It is sad that celebrity casting has taken over Broadway. This show has great music, a great cast, and some great performances that deserve Tony noms. Here's hoping they get recognized even with it closing.

Would love to see this off-Broadway. It could survive a little longer in a smaller theatre. I am going again (the 4th time) on Saturday.

Had SIDE SHOW gone into an 1100 seat theater, would the financing been radically different? In other ways, if it had the option of NEXT TO NORMAL (which I doubt would've filled the St. James comfortably), and had the Booth, would the show have capitalized differently, with a significantly lower break even? And had a shot if they could fill say 750-900 seats a night out of 1100? I find myself confused by these issues in 2014. And much is made of theater size.

"Hollywood Reporter claiming "discussions are under way to take the production to London."

Actually my sources close to the show tell me this is indeed true. There are very serious conversations happening about taking the show to London, which would work well for Condon since he is heading over there to film Disney's Beauty and the Beast.

People discuss a lot of things. Just the other day, I was discussing building a scale model of the Torre del Mangia in my backyard. Probably won't happen, though.

Being a devotee of the original production, I was extremely upset to hear about this closing. Friends of mine who saw it at La Jolla, Kennedy Center, and at the St James reveled about this cast and Condon's reworking. I see that Broadway Records tells us there will be an OBC of this revival. Has anybody heard anything otherwise?? I suppose I should start a new thread when I ask this question, but what do you guys think will open at the St James this spring? It's not a Schubert-owned property, so I suppose it won't be filled by The Visit. Could the producer Ms. Hammerstein and director Eric Schafer be looking at the St James for Gigi?

As was discussed in the "St James" thread, "Something Rotten" will be there in the Spring.

I saw someone ask about rush but didn't see any replies. Do they have a set number of tickets or do they sell whatever's left? Has anyone rushed recently or have opinions about how busy rush will be the closer to closing?

I'll be out of town for the holidays and won't have a chance to rush until January 2 or 3. I'm not sure which is a better day: Saturday's a two show day but on the Friday people may still be away and weekdays usually are slower traffic than weekends.

Honestly, gauging rush for the final weekend based on rush now wouldn't really tell you much. Not to mention, the amount of leftover seats now versus the final performances will also have little correlation.

Final performances vary show to show. Some sell out, some just do the same middling business that is why they are closing to begin with. This show seems to me like one where the final show will be a sold out lovefest, and the final weekend will also be pretty packed.

Since they seem to be offering discounts all the way through the end (or were last I looked), I wouldn't risk it for the final weekend, and would score some sort of discounted ticket and be done with it.

This has nothing to do with "today" or "taking over". This is an age-old practice for Broadway and nothing new. Some celebrities sell tickets. Some don't. Some productions with celebrities flop. Some don't. Some productions become smash hits with no celebrities. Some don't. But the casting of celebrities for any reason is a Broadway tradition.
