Posted: 11/7/05 at 10:58pmAre these the stories about the school that was built on its side and each classroom is above the other? I used to LOVE those books! I had completely forgotten about them. They were fantastic - I could see it being a very interesting theatrical production.

Yes instead of 30 classrooms being built one next to the other, they were built one on top of the other.
These books are an absolute riot. I bet this would be interesting onstage.

Ooh I loved these but especially the math problem books, anyone remember those? There were two versions I think, sometimes you had to add words and figure out the numbers each letter stood for, weird, tricky stuff like that. Probably should have realized my math geekness back then. Still remember the first problem in book 2:
Boys + Boys = Silly
Mathematically, S has to be 1 b/c you can't get an extra digit and have it be more than one. So 1 goes to the end of boys, so y is 2, then L is 4, so O cannot be 2 so O has to be 7 to still equal L and keeping in mind a one is carried over and you can't repeat numbers, B has to be 6 and i is 3.
Ah, the good old days

My good friend's dad is directing it. I believe it to be just a play. I hear it's going to be really great. I've seen some set pieces, they look just wonderful. I plan on seeing it.

Posted: 11/8/05 at 5:19pmI saw a producton of this (don't know if it is the same one) at a theatre near me in Philly, The Arden. It was hilarious, and anyone who liked the books as a child should go. It works really well on stage.

Posted: 11/8/05 at 5:33pmI was just in Sideways Stories From Wayside School last spring!! It's a short play, about an hour and a half. It's HILARIOUS! I played Bebe. The guy who wrote it (i'm drawing a blank on the name.. sorry!) combined different stories and characters from three or four of Lois Sachar's books on Wayside School into a short play. It really is for a younger audience, but all the adults who came to see it said it was so funny, and a really great family show! The script gives you some really wacky characters, and a lot of room to develop them. The sets (at lease in our production) are really colorful and fun!

Sorry, QMAN, I know nothing of the show or what characters are in it. I just know that a bunch of my friends are in it. Haha.
Yeah, Emerson puts on some great productions. The other play that was put on before A New Brain this semester was The Distance from Here by Neil LaBute, and it was insanely intense and twisted. I'm in a mainstage production in February (Spring Awakening by Frank Wedekind). People in or around the area should come see it if they'd like to. Yay!
