It was reported that Roy was mauled by a tiger doing his act last night & was rushed to a hospital. He had massive blood loss & emergency surgery. All performances were cancelled indefinitely. If he survives, what are the odds that he will never do his act again?
My wife & I saw the show years ago & it was entertaining. If they cease to perform, the Mirage hotel will take a big hit.
I cannot see them doing their act without their signature white tigers

What I don't get is this: The entire emergency response plan was "If tiger attacks, hit with microphone?" I mean, "thunk, thunk, thunk," just doesn't seem to cut it.
One hates to see a beloved entertainer stomped or mauled, (poor Tippi Hedrin), but tigers are tigers and it's surprising it took this long for something bad to happen.

Posted: 10/4/03 at 2:00pmThey were lucky they were not mauled by an animal in 30 years. Those animals are basically wild and not meant to perform on command. I doubt if he will recoup from his injuries. It sounds very serious. I saw the show also and thought it was magnificant. The animal that mauled him was not one he worked with very long I do not think. Most of them live on their premises and are brought up there as cubs. I doubt after this, he would want to do the show. The Mirage is going get hit pretty bad.

It's horrible what happened to him, but I agree with Namo - I'm surprised it hadn't happened earlier.
That said, I always find trained animal acts kinda creepy. Not quite as unpleasant as clowns, though.

I just went and read the CNN news story. How horrible! I feel really bad for Roy but I also hope they don't punish the tiger.
Anytime something like this happens, it's the animal that pays. Someone teases a dog and it bites--all of a sudden it's a bad dog and needs to put down.
Some teases a gator and it gets them. Who pays? The gator.
It's not fair. I could go on and on about this because this is one of my biggest peeves.
My heart aches for the man but also for the poor animal who didn't know any better.

d of b....if a gator attacks I make a nice pair of boots and a belt.
But seriously, I know that if this should be the end of them then they will be fine. They have made a mint and a fortune on their act. BUT... I hope they get back into the swing of things and it does not stop their performances.

Assuming Roy survives the whole ordeal, then the pair could always discontinue the show but keep up their "zoo" and conservation efforts.
(Siegfried and Roeper just sounds bad.)

Posted: 10/4/03 at 2:27pmI'm with Dof. I hope the poor tiger isn't punished. It probably felt threatened and did what came naturally.
re: re: re: re: Siegfried & Roy Finished ?#8
Posted: 10/4/03 at 2:27pmBut maybe they might want to switch to house cats. I saw a guy in Key West who had housecats he had trained to walk a tightrope and everything. And it didn't look as if beatings were involved or anything. It was the best (and only good) thing about the Key West visit!

I agree 100% with Dof. Poor, poor man, yes, but what a crummy way to make a living. And it was only a matter of time before something like this happened. After all humans lash out w/o thinking all the time. Wild animals have pride & dignity we try to destroy by making them live our way. I hope other wild animal acts think about retiring instead of being harder on their innocent creatures.

JUST TO CLARIFY...#11
Posted: 10/4/03 at 2:56pmIt wasn't just like one of the regular tigers went psycho... It was a brand new one and it was the tiger's first time on stage. It was on stage with him for 40 minutes straight then it just attacked him... My friend was there and said the tiger dragged him around and he looked like a little doll... she said it was horrible. Guess what GottaGimmick, turns out that the line about the tiger being new was also a gimmick! Remember how Tommy Tune brought that woman up from his audience every single night for an "impromptu" dance? And it turned out every night it was the same woman/same routine? It was sorta like that! According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, that tiger had been in the act since he was six months old and the "This is his first night in the show" was a line Roy said every night. We are so often taken in by showbiz "honesty."

Posted: 10/4/03 at 3:13pmI know. Because that's what audience members said Roy said. And he did say it. But it turned out to be less than true.

Namo-
Did the cat have 6 toes? That seems to be the main oddity in Key West since a bunch of cats at the Hemmingway House have 6 toes on at least one foot.
How Bee-zah!
re: re: re: re: re: JUST TO CLARIFY...#16
Posted: 10/4/03 at 3:29pmI didn't count the toes, but that would have given me something to do on Key West. Seems like the cats ain't the only in-breeders there. (No offense intended to actual Key Westers who come to this site. But that would indicate a reading ability.)

Well I enjoy it for the scuba, but yes, it's slow - unless there's a festival going on. Then it's, well nevermind.
Surely you enjoyed the cuisine? Conch Fritters anyone?
Oh. Sorry, are we off-topic now?

I'm a vegetarian, so I would go with the corn fritters. I am not a freak about the animals, tho. I thought the Key West guy with the cats had really accomplished something because most housecats I have met have trained their humans instead of the other way around. All I know is, if a tiger had me by the throat, I'd hit it with my high heels if the microphone didn't work.

Well I do have to agree with you. You'd think with years of experience with the different animals they've raised from birth, at some point they would have at least have picked up "What to do if you are attacked by a tiger for dummies"
I feel terrible for Roy, and from what I gathered in the article, it's extremely serious - so this isn't meant as mocking. I'm half surprised something like this didn't happen sooner (glad it hadn't) and also wondering what was different this time. Unfortunately with animals, it's not like you can say, "hey.. what the...."
That IS where internet posters and animals do differ (HA)

Posted: 10/4/03 at 3:48pmActually, when it's a tiger lunging at you, you can probably say "Hey... what the..." but that's about it. And, your book title made me laugh out loud. Maybe there's a TigerEmergencies.com?

thanks. it's actually a "staple" joke of mine whenever I hear of something stupid.
Had a really rough flight a few months back so I turned to the person next to me and said "well right now the captain is only on page 47 of 'flying for dummies' "
...try it, it pretty much works for any subject matter
Like on here, you could say that some people need "sarcasm for dummies"

Hey...I don't even think it was Roy!!!! Check out this old Las Vegas Sun article I found ( http://www.lasvegassun.com/sunbin/stories/archives/2001/feb/23/511475220.html )
The most interesting quote has their manager explaining why the rumor of Roy dying of AIDS and being replaced by a double couldn't be true:
"In promoting a flamboyant, surreal show and image, both performers continually deal with bizarre speculation -- much stranger fodder than the Roy-has-AIDS talk. Over the past few years Yuman has been asked if Roy has passed away and been replaced by a double.
"They are two of the most famous live entertainers in the world, and people fabricate stories about them," Yuman said. "Let me ask you this: If you had a Doberman you had owned and trained from 4 weeks old to 4 years old, and you suddenly died and were replaced by a twin brother to care for this animal, what would happen?
"The Doberman would bite your butt off, that's what. There's only one man on Earth who can handle an 800-pound cat and that's Roy Uwe Ludwig Horn."
