How were the half a dozen or so sally replacements from the 1998 revival? Were any of them standouts in the role? I’m particularly interested in Susan Egan and Kate Shindles take on the role and how they were.

I saw a lot of Sallys across the first Roundabout run. In terms of acting, the one who came closest to Richardson in terms of emotional impact was Gina Gershon. Susan Egan sang the role well but was kind of Disney Princess-y. Katie Finneran was not as interesting as you’d hope she’d be; Mary McCormack really nailed the good-time-girl element of the character. Lea Thompson sang better than I expected and acted well. Jane Leeves was the saddest Sally I saw. Molly Ringwald was fine but not terribly memorable. I missed Jennifer Jason Leigh, Kate Shindle, Melina Kanakaredes, Debbie Gibson and Joely Fisher.
As for the original Roundabout run - I went to the show when Egan was Sally - however she was out that night and Linda Romoff went on. It remains one of the best performances I’ve seen. Endearing, heartbreaking, and adorable with her curly amber hair. That woman has true star quality. Months later she replaced Egan and they slapped that black page boy wig on her. I digress....
I went back a second time to see Melina Kanakaredes and John Secada. Secada was sensual and slimy. Kanakaredes was bland. You missed nothing. Her singing was serviceable (I’m in the boat that Sally shouldn’t be exceptional - though that didn’t apply for Romoff) but there was not much there in her performance. The title song ended with no reason for anyone to care. Not good.
