Idina's technique is different, but that's not to say that it's in anyway wrong, it obviousley WORKS FOR HER.
I keep reading all these posts from self described "singers" with this and that, Well I've also had many years if voice training and I'll tell you that perhaps the most valuable lesson one of my teachers told me was that "EVERY VOICE IS UNIQUE, DIFFERENT THINGS WORK FOR DIFFERENT PEOPLE".
Basically just because you don't do the "standard technique" does not mean that you are screaming or you sound bad at all, furthermore to label a fan of a performer like Idina Menzel a "teenybopper" just because they enjoy her voice and others may not is ridiculous.
Idina's LAST note at the Tony's was a bit off, but that was nerves, watch David Letterman or go see Wicked and you'll see she usually nails it. But more than anything I'm glad she won the award (which she greatly deserved) and no matter how disected every note she sings and every line she acts is, she's an amazing talent, Streisand technique or not.
Come on, y'all. Cheno told Idina to sing like that. She said everyone would really like it........
if you all look back there was a long discussion on the way idina sings/ her technique. you can look for it and you'll see lots of comments. anyway.. She is unbelievable
I happen to be a 34 year-old fan of Idina. I recognized her talent when I saw her in Rent a month after it won the Tony. There was no CD at the time and I'd never heard of her, but she gave one of the most memorable performances I'd ever seen.
And I completely agree with enjoying_broadway. There is no ONE technique that applies to all singers and voices. I don't find Idina's belt shrill or creamlike in the least. The "shrill" sound is the natural quality of her voice which cannot be changed without major surgery, very much like the heavily lauded voice of Kristin Chenoweth. Kristin has stylized her voice more heavily to use to her advantage for comedic roles. Idina is a different "type", so her voice is less stylized, but essentially, they have remarkably similar voices. Kristin uses more of a head mix, while Idina uses more of a chest mix.
As for screaming, that implies vocal fry which is not evident in the Tony performance or on the Wicked CD. She uses a little bit of it in Rent for the purpose of musical style, but not in such a way that would be harmful or damaging to her voice. If she were screaming, she would have missed half her performances from burned out vocal chords and exhausted throat muscles.
I have Idina's autograph, so I don't care either way. And she is really polite to her fans, if that counts for anything.....

Mistermatt, I agree with what you said 100 %. I am 23 and have not been a "teeny-bopper" for quite awhile.
I have also had years of vocal training and there's no one right way, except the general rule of not over straining your voice to injure it. There's no evidence Idina does this, because as people have pointed out, she wouldn't be able to sing eight shows a week if she is "screaming".
This world would be very boring if every person sounded the same. As I said in the thread related to this subject, she has a voice teacher whom she employs for this purpose and if a trained professional believed she was breathing improperly or doing something harmful to her voice, it would be nipped in the bud. She's both an incredible singer and actress and I was thrilled to death that she was recognized for that.

STOP CRITICIZING SOMEONE WHO JUST FREAKING WON A TONY AWARD!
It works for her, so I'm not complaining.
Well, hello Ms. Menzel. Nice to have you on the boards.
Cheno is lurking, too.........
