Sorry to start another thread, but whatever...
So I missed last year on Broadway and have too much to see this year (coming in May) but still wanting to see Drowsy Chaperone. What I'm wanting to know is...since Foster will likely be long gone by May and I assume, Bob Martin in London repeating his Broadway duties, and I really going to miss a fantastic show if I wait until the tour, or, is the Broadway production essential viewing even without the two principal performers gone? Basically, is it worth giving up a 2006-2007 season musical to see this show or will the eventual tour suffice?
It's hard to say, as their replacements have yet to be cast.
some people love it, others hate it. i remember the ny times said. Drowsy won't wake up and gave it 1 1/2 stars
Well all I know is I'd be bummed if I didn't see Bob Martin, Sutton Foster AND Beth Leavel all together. They are really fantastic, Sutton and Beth in their interactions.
That's true, though, I have a feeling that the show may be a little pointless without Martin...
You never know. I would still give it a chance. I've seen it twice already, and would see it again.
It's not a question of me liking the material, I adore it. I guess I'm just more concerned about wasting a slot on a show that will be the same on tour...
I mean, technically it will be the same on tour...its a unique show to cast but I wouldn't say impossible. Agian, Martin, Foster and Leavel (love her!) are amazing but if you don't have a preference, if you were a tourist without any prior knowledge of the show than I would say see the tour.
YOu guys convinced me, I'll see the tour if FOster, Martin, and Leveal are all gone, what's the point really?
I'd say see Drowsy on Bway as long as Beth Leavel and Danny Burstein are in... I think they make the show. Missing Bob Martin's performance may or may not be an issue depending on who they cast as his replacement. I don't think missing Foster will make much of a difference. I think she is a wonderful performer, but I don't think I'd miss her if she wasn't there. It's not like TMM or LW, which needed her.
Beth Leavel and Danny Burstein are worth it. Sutton is replaceable in this show (not to say she isn't fantastic). The greatest difference will be the show without Bob Martin. Of course, I'm sure a replacement could do very well in the role.
i was fortunate to see the original cast with everyone in the first time. the second time, Martin was out and so was Burstein. the show was still hysterical and i'm glad i saw it. yea, this is one show where the original cast was perfection in their roles, but i wasn't let down at all by the understudies.
i remember the ny times said. Drowsy won't wake up and gave it 1 1/2 stars
The Times? Really? I recall a rather positive review from Brantley (if not completely glowing, like others). And the Times (thank God) doesn't do "stars"...perhaps you're thinking of *gulp* Clive Barnes' *gulp* one-star review in the *gulp* New York Post?
I liked Martin, but I'm not sure I feel as though he's terribly irreplaceable as a performer. His best work is done as a writer, the result of which will stay even when he departs, because it's the writing itself. Someone else could perform the material just as well, I think. Same with Sutton -- and much of the cast, to me -- they're good, but certainly replaceable, and I think the show would be just fine without seeing them. The show's appeal rides, for me, on its material, not its actors.

i just wanted to say that, even a year later, hearing the overture of DROWSY gives me the thrills!!!!
^ Me too. I absolutely love the Drowsy Overture.
I love the overture in the theater, the way its played out, especially when the orchestra first builds up on it! Those who have seen the show will understand.
Bob Martin is a gem in this show. Absolutely hilarious.

I saw the show for the first time recently, with Joey Sorge as Aldolpho and Patrick Wetzel as MIC and the show was WONDERFUL.
Beth is the IT thing in the show. Sutton is getting highly over rated and frankly starting to just stumble through her performance. Bob is excellent but the lines are so funny you will just laugh because of how well written his speeches are. But Beth is The Drowsy Chaperone
See it on Broadway! You'll probably catch Beth Leavel and Danny Burstein. Sutton is terrific but replaceable, and it might be interesting to see someone other than Bob Martin's take on Man In Chair.
I'm sorry but I have to add some Sutton love to this thread! I, for one, thought she was brilliant (not at all over-rated). Beth Leavel is a star, through and through. I really enjoyed seeing this show, so I do think you should see it on Broadway, no matter who is in the cast :)
I don't think you'll walk away disappointed.
i concur! i don't know many Tony Award winners who'd be willing to do cartwheels every single show over & over for the sake of a new production....
