I have never seen "Mame" or "Hello Dolly" onstage. These are two revivals that I would welcome and run to see.

If you haven't seen MAME or DOLLY! on stage you've never seen them. The movie versions of both shows were positively wretched.

Revivals of both DOLLY and MAME are desperately needed. I've seen both at the Papermill, and both disappointed due to their leading ladies (Ebersole for Mame, Feldshuh for Dolly).

I have to agree with you there. The DOLLY was particularly dreadful. If the hip-hop choreography wasn't bad enough, Tovah's performance was. Why did she have to sound like James Cagney every time she quoted her late husband? Ephraim Levi was from Vienna, not from the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
(The show was so horrible that I called Carol Channing right from my seat during intermission. Carol couldn't believe what they'd done to the show.)

Actually, I was a little more disappointed in the Papermill's production of Mame, even though Kelly Bishop's performance as Vera was terrific. I think I'm a bigger fan of the material in Mame, and I hoping to someday see a production that meets or exceeds my expectations.

No offense, but could you point out the "interesting tidbits" in that article?

Can't you read the article yourself? You'll find them on page 2.
Thank you very much.

Great interview. Would love to see Catherine Zeta-Jones as Mame.

Ah the 4,652nd mention of a possible Mame revival is the "interesting tidbit"? Gotcha.

Its a West End producer involved with Mame, so its likley it will start in London.
Would love to see brand new revivals of these two shows. Londons Hello, Dolly 2009 Open Air revival was wonderful

Who wrote that crap anyway? You could use that "story" as a "what not to do" chapter in a journalism book.

Why so spiteful JoeKv99? Jeez.
Back to MAME and DOLLY, I'm chomping at the bit for some great new revivals of these shows. I saw a tour of MAME with Ginger Rogers yeeeeaaaars ago. With only the OBC and the dreadful movie to turn to, this show needs to be revived. Great score and fabulous book.
I've seen every production of DOLLY with Carol Channing from the first to the last. I even saw a tour with Yvonne DeCarlo years ago that was surprising fun. But I would welcome a new star taking on this great show too.
I guess the success of the current LA CAGE has created the opportunity for both and I hope it happens.

The Menier are doing 'Mame'

Oh, no! A Menier MAME????? It'll be reduced to a cast of 12 and be performed in a small theater that's been made to look like a Beekman Place apartment. Heaven forfend!

I would love to see a Hello Dolly revival starring Bernadette and a Mame revival starring Patti. Is this ideal casting? Probably not. But I'd love it nonetheless.

Swap those two and I'd be happier.

The revival of MAME at the Kennedy Center with Christine Baranski was wonderful, but they couldn't afford to bring it to Broadway. Pity as it was so good, with Emily Skinner as Gooch!

Brick...lets have both revivals open the same day with Patti as Dolly and Bernadette as Mame, and then after 6 months they can swap roles.

Peters and/or LuPone as Mame and/or Dolly would keep me away.

LuPone is terribly wrong for Dolly.

Yes Lupone is altogether wrong for the role, whereas a 90 year old parading around like a 25 year old is more than appropriate

I thought Jerry Herman had said he wanted LuPone to play Dolly. Or was that Mame?
When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain.

Jordan...that was perfection!
But I am sure that Miss DollyPop will be directly involved with the casting of the Hello Dolly revival.
