I just got back from the concert version of Next Thing You Know, the new song cycle by Joshua Salzman and Ryan Cunningham. Overall, I thought the music was great . It's clearly a work in progress, but still quite wonderful. Colin Hanlon and David Austin were wonderful as always, and Jay A. Johnson and Sally Eidman were quite good. But the star of the evening (as usual) was Farah Alvin. That girl has such an amazing set of pipes, wonderful stage presence, and sharp comic timing. It's too bad that she has never had a lead on Broadway. (I would love to see her as Mother in the Ragtime revival). Did anyone else go tonight?

She is FIERCE.

Love her on the Broadway Bacharach album.

Wasn't she in THE TEN COMMANDMENTS?

Agreed. I didn't see the concert tonight, but she's always great. She's played Mother in Ragtime somewhere, correct?

I bought her CD at a show a few years ago. She writes music as well as she sings it.

I'm glad she's finally starting to get the recognition she deserves!

She is astonishing. There must be something for her in development for this or next season.

I love this song cycle and I heard Farah and Colin sing some of the songs at the Kennedy Center earlier this year, but alas I could not be at the concert this week. Yes, she does need a lead in a Broadway show!

Doesn't she sing that song that's a bonus cut on the Reefer Madness CD? She's stellar in that song, and I really enjoy that song.

Alvin played Mother in a concert staging of RAGTIME at the White Plains Performing Arts Center last year (and was divine.)

She's certainly overdue for a leading role on Broadway.

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.
