Son of a Witch as a musical?

I know that sequels to musicals haven't had the greatest history, but I think this has potential. Some unknown actor could make their Broadway debut as Liir. Obviously, it would have to be toned down like Wicked.

The musical adaptation of Wicked changed way too much for Son of a Witch to be a sequel to the musical version of Wicked.

I'm going to assume this has been talked about ad nauseam on here but I'll put in my two cents now.

This wouldn't really work as a sequel to Wicked the Musical because they changed the ending of the book. Fiyero came back as the Scarecrow and Elphaba is alive. That kind of defeats the entire purpose of "Son of a Witch."

It would be tricky to deal with, because it couldn't be marketed as a sequel to WICKED the musical since they altered the story so much, and would have to be either its own entity or try to conform and become a sequel to the musical. The former wouldn't really work because the story depends largely on what was set up in Wicked the book and it wouldn't make sense to start from there, and the latter would require so much modification it would barely be worth it for what would be left.

Never say never, but I agree this wouldn't work with the way Wicked the book was changed for the stage. The way the musical is written, anything billed as a sequel would be expected to focus on Elphaba.

It's been a while since I read the books, but I don't think Son of a Witch is as good a story as Wicked is (as a novel).

That sounds exactly like what Winnie Holzman did with Wicked the musical.

I'm obsessed with the Wicked series, but Liir was my least favorite/most boring character in the entire series. His character made me mad to no end. I can see it being a movie, maybe.

Stephen Schwartz had openly expressed in an interview on Broadway.com that he doesn't plan on doing a sequel because he felt he said what he had to say about Wicked!

I loved the Wizard of Oz and the first Wicked book, but hated the follow-ups. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I go the sense that Son of a Witch was trying to in a way to not contradict what the musical had done?

Ha, so true! I still have a soft spot for the musical, but its practically not even an adaptation. I think it's more in the "suggested by" category.

For the record, I too highly disliked the sequels to Wicked. I thought they lacked something that made me like the first book so much and could barely get through them.
