If you want to talk about getting screwed... you could say August Wilson was. While he was often nominated, he only won one award and it was for Fences, which isn't even his best work. (It is pretty damn good though). Unlike SS, Wilson went 1 for 8.

Jewishboy, it reads as if you've been going to the theatre for "knowledge" and not English class.
Stay in school. The more you know.

Posted: 6/11/06 at 11:57pmThe Pajama Game taking the Tony over Sweeney sorta made me throw up in my mouth. Completely rediculous.

Posted: 6/12/06 at 12:03amI'm suprised that it took 30 posts for someone to make that joke. Even though Sondheim's name didn't appear on the ballot I'm sure he would have like to see the show do better tonight. However, I'm sure he's used to his work being snubbed by now. At least we have Company to look foward to.

Posted: 6/12/06 at 12:06amAfter all these posts, how can you still say he has been snubbed?

Seriously people, if there's anyone in the Broadway world who has not been snubbed, it's Sondheim. (and maybe Audra McDonald or Angela Lansbury, but who's counting)
It is a shame Sweeney lost, but at least it lost to a good show like Pajama Game. Doyle got what he deserved, and although Cerveris deserved a win, he has his Tony. It's recouped it's investment, it'll still run for quite a bit off of low prodcution costs and good word of mouth - this show has been one of the most successful sondheim productions ever, life WILL go on.

Posted: 6/12/06 at 12:10amI didn't say that Sondheim himself was snubbed, but Sweeney Todd is still his work even if his name didn't appear on the ballot.

Posted: 6/12/06 at 12:14amSweeney was alot more than snubbed. They were Screwed over beyonbd belife. And notice once it lost michael knew he didnt win as did patti but especially michael his face was heartbroken when they announced nominees. Sweeney is the best show in New York right now and defintily amazing and differnt from everything else. And now i predcit that next year the same thing will happen to company next year.

I predict Sondheim will go home empty-handed for the Company revival. Marguerite: He's got to write a new score to be eligible, unless they revive Getting Away with Murder HAHAHAHAHA
re: Sondheim has been screwed...#38
Posted: 6/12/06 at 12:54amso, in my opinion, sweeney is the best thing on broadway and has the most talented cast that deserved awards. but award shows always get crap wrong...academy awards in particular. there is so much political stuff that goes into all awards. i am so angry that sweeney did not get more awards.
re: Sondheim has been screwed...#39
Posted: 6/12/06 at 12:55amLet's hope the same thing does happen to COMPANY. Then, perhaps people will leave that dreary, non-melodic Sondheim alone. I mean, seriously, where's the f'ing melody, Steve?

Posted: 6/12/06 at 1:19amFor the record, next season is the revival season: Les Miserables, Chorus Line, etc. So don't be surprised if Company doesn't win next year. Just warning you now.

I've already commented on this in a couple of similar threads...
But I am devastated over "Sweeney" in nearly every single category that it lost. UGH. i actually sat in that theatre tonight and cringed for the entire last hour and a half.
It's actually kind of funny...a man walked by me as I was waiting to meet friends after we got out of Radio City tonight, and by his badge it was obvious that he was somehow internally involved with the awards. So, he briefly struck up a
conversation and I couldn't help asking..."Are you a Tony Voter?" and he asked why I would ask such a thing and I replied with "Because if you are, we have some things to discuss, like why "Sweeney" was raped..." and he just started laughing and said "I have a feeling you're not the only one who has a problem with that".
Interesting.

I agree, I did not see it as Sondheim getting screwed. That didn't really even cross my mind until I started reading these posts. After all, the original production of Sweeney Todd won the Tony, Angela Lansbury won the Tony for Mrs. Lovett, I'm pretty sure it won best score (how could it not?!). Apparently it was just this production that got screwed, and frankly, I'm thrilled because I hated it! If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Posted: 6/12/06 at 2:17amAs Margo Channing has pointed out, Sondheim is the winningest composer in the history of the Tonys, so it's hard to say he's been 'screwed.' In case, anyone forgot, his production of 'Assassins' won Best Revival 2 seasons ago; in fact, it won more Tonys than any other production that year, and still closed only a month after the Tonys (!).

Sondheim himself has even expressed reservations about the endless stream of awards that comes his way: "I am dismayed at how it has slowed me down. I'm afraid of what people expect of me now."
I'm sure he would have liked the Sweeney revival to have won tonight so that it might run longer. But I doubt he feels misused by the Tonys.
