Songs That You Only Like Because of the Performer

Are there any songs that you like to listen to solely because of the person singing them and not because of the song itself?

I noticed that I've listened to "The Ad-dressing of Cats" from CATS a lot of times, but I really don't like the song at all. I just love Ken Page's delivery.

I never really liked the song 'easy to be hard' from Hair. But now It's one of the songs from the cast recording where I listen to the most, just because Caissie Levy is singing it. I really love her voice in that song.

"Ireland" and it's subsequent reprise in Legally Blonde were IMO a disaster with anyone but Orfeh. Her voice sounded fantastic, esp. in the reprise.

For me the question is: are there any singers you'll only listen to b/c they're singing a certain composer's songs.

I listen to Andrea Marcovecci singing December Songs only b/c Yeston wrote it.

(not saying she's a bad singer, obviously she's immensely talented; I just don't care for her voice)

If a song is a good one, I'll recognize that and like the song even when delivered by a sub-par performer. Conversely, I'll pass on a stinker no matter how good the singer is. Example: "Easy to Be Hard" is about the only song I like from Hair and even though I think Cassie Levy oversings it, I still like listening to it.

Hest, I couldn't agree more! ^_^ Actually, I heard a dude I know singing that song, and it sounded pretty good, too. I think it's actually better suited to the male voice... whenever a girl sings it, it usually comes out as shrill and screamy.

Raul Esparza's Defying Gravity is godly. Though I did like the song before then. He just sings it better than anyone I've ever heard. Ever.

ETA: I only like MY Conviction because Andrew Kober sings it. I mean I like it in the show, but not on my iPod. but I always listen anyway, just cause of him.

Raul's Defying Gravity was great. Loved it. I also am a huge fan of Norm Lewis' rendition of Rain from Once On This Island, though I don't generally like the song. I believe you can find it on that site.

Agreed on "Rain"-- and also, his version of "Before the Parade Passes By." That song never grabbed my interest much before, for some reason, and I always felt guilty about it.

Thought of another one. I don't think I would've enjoyed "I Ain't Got Time" from Zanna, Don't as much without Anika Larsen singing.

At the risk of getting eaten for this, I think "Green Dress" from Tick Tick is very weak without Raul.

re: Songs That You Only Like Because of the Performer

While I can?t think of any songs that I like only because of the performer, I can think of two instances (one broadway, one not) where the exact opposite was true, where I HATED a song until I heard someone else sing it and then loved it.

The first is Landslide by Stevie Nicks?always hated it, then I heard the Dixie Chicks version and I discovered that I liked the song a lot?just can?t stand Stevie Nicks.

The second is Out Tonight?it was the one song that I almost always jumped past when listening to the recording?couldn?t stand it, wasn?t a huge fan of Daphne Rubin-Vega otherwise, but could deal with her. Then I saw the movie and when Rosario Dawson sings it, it is easily one of my favorites in the show.
