Hi everyone,
I've recently trying to think of songs that talk about a friendship that has fallen apart. Alas I can't seem to think of any. I did come up with "When I Look At You" from The Scarlet Pimpernal. I know thats about a lost romance but it works for a friendship as well. But yeah I was wondering if anyone else could think of any.
Thanks

What It Means to be a Friend from 13 is cute and fits the description perfectly.
"Franklin Shepard, Inc." from "Merrily We Roll Along"
Still Hurting - the last 5 years
I miss you old friend - Dreamgirls
How could I lose you? Myths and Hymns
Isn't it better - The world goes round (not sure of the actual kander and ebb show)
empty chairs at empty tables - les mis
perhaps "for good" from wicked could be used?
Amneris, I was going to say "For Good" as well. It can be taken either as very sweet or very passive aggressive...or both at the same time.
All 3 pertain to lost loves, but i suppose they could work out of context:
Not A Day Goes By-Merrily We Roll Along
Old Friend-I'm Getting My Act Together and Taking It On the Road
Ever More Without You-The Woman In White
I don't know how much this relates to losing a friend, but "You Walk with Me" form the Full Monty came to my head.
I can't believe no one has mentioned "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" from Phantom. Great song, one of Webber's best.

"For Good" From Wicked is the best in this category, but also
good is "What You Own" from Rent
There's nothing more touching than "For Good" being sung at a funeral. Uhh. It brings a tear to the eye...
basically any song from Elegies

There's a really nice song I wrote on this subject for a musical I wrote.

I am gonna say For Good also. When I went through a really bad breakup that song helped me through it.

LOSING YOUR FRIEND TO DEATH
"Goodbye My Friend" - Linda Rodstadt
"What Would I Do?" - Falsettos
"Learning to Let Go" - Elegies for Angels, Punks & Raging Queens
"You'll Never Walk Alone" - Carousel
"You Oughtta Be Here With Me" - Big River
"Left Behind" - Spring Awakening
LOSING FRIENDSHIP
"Without You As A Friend" - Martin Guerre
"Leaving's Not the Only Way to Go" - Big River
"When She Loved Me" - Toy Story 2
It's not exactly about losing a friend, but it sort of describes a similar feeling, "I Remember Sky." I sang it at a friends funeral.
"Good Thing Going" from "Merrily We Roll Along" would fit too.

I think "Without You" from RENT is a good choice. Life goes one, but I'd die without you. It shows how important a love/friendship is, and without it, a piece of you dies.
I also agree with "For Good" - The only problem I have with that song is the "Who can say if I've been changed for the better," part. As jordangirl said, it can be kind of passive aggressive. The rest of the song is great though.
I just thought of another:
Tell Me It's Not True-Blood Brothers
It could work, although the whole Marilyn Monroe thing is a little strange and makes a bit more sense in the show...
"You Were a Friend to Me" by Carol Hall is a nice wistful song of rememberence of a fading friendship
Wouldn't "I Miss the Music" from Curtains, work too? That was the first thing i thought when i read the thread title.
I'm going to third "What it Means to Be a Friend" from 13
it's a really good "losing a friend" song
