Ironically, I posted a thread with this same title in November. This is not a good year for me.
My grandpa, who I was extremely close to, passed away unexpectedly this morning. The first thing I though, after the initial shock passed (though really, it still hasn't), was that I have to sing. My grandpa believed in me more than anyone.
Any song suggestions? I have a few already, but I haven't found "the song" yet.
I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride.
I love you because I know no other way than this.
I believe in fate
But it's up to us to follow through

I am so sorry for your loss.
I think the song "Days of Plenty" from Little Women is gorgeous and very appropriate for a funeral. Just change the pronouns.

I'm sorry for your loss.
Was there a song you sang that he especially loved? I'd go with that one.
LIVE THAT LESSON!!!!!!

Posted: 6/27/07 at 10:13amI am very sorry for your loss! The song that I have chosen is not from Broadway, but it is a beautiful song played at funerals. It's called Shepherd Me O God by Marty Haugen.

Posted: 6/27/07 at 10:19amIt's a love song, but "The Human Heart" from Once on this Island is a beautiful song, and the lyrics aren't super specific to just a relationship, it's about life and connection in general.

I actually think "Those You've Known" from Spring Awakening would be a good song choice.
I am so sorry for your loss. I wish you all the strength for when you are singing, as I've been in a similar situation.

I did "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" in memory of someone I lost.
It's a special song for me for that reason.
I'm very sorry for your loss.

Gosh, I'm sorry to hear about your loss.
"How Glory Goes" from Floyd Collins is a beautiful song, but perhaps it may be too difficult for you.
"Everytime We Say Goodbye" is a really nice Cole Porter song. I don't know what show it's from though.
Don't do anything from Wicked, especially "For Good." It's a sappy, annoying, trite song. As much as I hate Phantom "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" would be a much better choice if you're looking for something more current, though Floyd Collins was only written 10 or so years ago.
And unless you can handle all of the key changes (it depends on what copy of the music you get), "You Raise Me Up" is not a good choice.

Posted: 6/27/07 at 11:08amI know it's rap but "I'll be missing you" - Diddy.

Posted: 6/27/07 at 11:11am^ No. It could be a very nice rap song too, but a rap song would be a bit of a ludicrious to perform at a grandparent's funeral, unless of course he was a big rap fan.

The Human Heart is a wonderful song...
and to the person who finds the WICKED song trite, I have requested that they play "For Good" (the Stephen Schwartz version... that he does solo on the If I Sing cd.) for my friends and family. I think it is tacky that you make a snide comment on people honest heartfelt recommendations for a sad situation.

Posted: 6/27/07 at 12:02pmI'm not a huge Wicked fan, but I do enjoy "For Good" and I think the message of the song is appropriate.

So sorry for your loss...
I've always really like Days of Plenty from Little Women...but changing "she's" to "he's"...
#22re: Songs for a funeral/memorial?
Posted: 6/27/07 at 12:09pmBut there's so many better songs out there other than For Good!
#23re: Songs for a funeral/memorial?
Posted: 6/27/07 at 12:10pmI agree, but I don't think trite is the right word. And I think in a situation like this, a little sappiness is okay.
