There's always something I've been confused about with Defying Gravity - hopefully the answer isn't obvious. :)
So, basically the plot is that the two witches end up in the attic/top level of the Wizards place at the end of Act one. My question is - when she rises up - where is she going? To the roof of the attic? Then what? :)
This question is kinda stupid - but it's something I just thought of while driving and figured someone on here could give an opinion..
Just curious..

Ha...well probably out of the nearest window.
Or she just stays up there on the cherry picker.
She could fly out a window.
I think it's more just to make a point that Elphaba has had it with what's expected of her and she has to break the mold. Flying away is the best way of doing this.
I've only seen it once just recently in San Diego, but if I'm not mistaken there was a projection that gives the illusion of a ceiling window that disappears when she rises up, so that seems to support the window theory...
IMO, Elphie is most certainly heading out the nearest window to freedom

come on people -- it's wicked we're talking about... you know, the show that requires no explanation whatsoever???
sorry. I couldn't control my sarcasm. :-P
I guess it's implied that she flies through a window. or that she raises the roof through her performance so that it isn't a problem. either way, I gotta say -- it is interesting to wonder...

CATSNYrevival- I am pretty sure their is no projection of a window
Okay, this is where the number takes artistic liberties and does something theatrical. The audience is supposed to not wonder why the ceiling has magically dissapeared. This is similar to One Day More from Les Miserables... no, Valjean's boat is not actually two feet in front of the people marching through Paris.
Valjean is on a boat in Les Miserables? Whoops - missed that one.. :)
Thanks for the opinions - I guess I couldn't think of something as simple as a window. :)

I always thought she blew the roof off, lol. Or she just stayed in mid air until the guards agreed to leave her alone, then came down, haha.

Probubly out the window, but her main point is to probubly get out of reach of the guns.
Yeah, supposedly he's sailing away. But then he changes his mind and comes back. That's why he has to pack up his things.

I always imagined her in the attic with the guards/Glinda beneath, then somehow it transitions into her being outside, above the Emerald City, outside of the tower, with everyone looking up at her as she's flying. Great moment.

You know, I never really thought this hard about it.
I honestly think this was a mistake, overlooked by the creators. But, it's not too hard to imagine her busting through the skylight or something. I don't think it really harmed the show or broke the moment in any way. But it definitely doesn't seem like something they would do incidentally...

This is true, Tag. The Wizard may very well have invested in screen doors or skylights, or rather, just not bothered to repair broken holes or leaks. He can't do the magic, after all OOPS OMG SPOILER UH OH. Hah.

In Defying Gravity, there is a projection (starting from the entrance into the attic) that shows sunlight shining through a window. Go search for one of the videos on a video site. Its there right from the get go. No overlooking by the creative team, just overlooking by the viewers.

When she runs upstage to get into the cherry picker, I thought it was to be assumed she was running towards a window or something, and then was flying outside. because at the end, when the song goes, "so we've got to bring her down!", the ensemble appears, who are outside looking at her in the sky over emerald city.
Re LES MISERABLES, Valjean and Cosette are packing (as they prepared to leave France) during the Act I finale. Thus, they haven't gotten on the boat yet. Also, Valjean has told Cosette that they won't leave until the following day and it's still the night before when Act I ends. Valjean doesn't change his mind until after he has confiscated the letter from Eponine and read it.
Spoilers:
I thought it was obvious. Elphaba flies so fast she goes through the roof and the impact from the roof and her head causes her to turn green and then it starts raining and she goes in the stage.
I think Matt has the idea. Elphie has not mastered her powers yet and the flying is a reaction to her stress level at the moment as she "overpowers" the guards muscle control and gets away from them as far as possible in the attic space.
This is a great question. It is almost as good as my question of when Fiyero swings in on the rope and says "Let the green girl go." Where is the rope coming from?
