Posted: 6/6/12 at 7:58pmAnyone think a remake with some of the Carnegie Hall cast would be nice? I obviously have only seen the DVD but what were the general thoughts on Reba?

Posted: 6/6/12 at 8:10pmThere was talks about a possible remake. They were going to make the story much darker... My ideal cast would be headed by Kristen Wiig as Nellie Forbush, she would be hilarious, probably couldn't sing it, but I'd be interested to see how she'd interpret it. Matthew Morrison would probably be in with a chance to play Cable, since he's now enough of a 'name'

Reba McEntire is 57 so kind of unlikely. Wish they could do it with Paulo Szot, Kelli O'Hara and Loretta Ables Sayre, what a wonderful cast, but since they aren't famous guess that's unlikely too? On the CD Matthew Morrison seems to struggle with "Younger than Springtime." Whatever happened to this movie anyway? If ever a movie musical needed a re-make that 50's thing with almost everybody dubbed sure does.
Just looked and seems like this is the last mention of it

Just looked a little more and Bob Balaban just tweeted this June 2
"Bob Balaban Bob Balaban ?@BobBalaban
. @RaymondMcNeel Progress on South Pacific? Sort of. We have a smashing new screenplay. Respectful to the original. But not slavish."
That's good, huh? They've now got a screenplay. Wonder what "not slavish" means.

Yes, I found it a mess and it made me appreciate the original movie, even with those filters, more (why was Josh Logan such a great theatre director apparently, buthisfilms are often bloated like Camelot, or even when he adapted his plays like SP and Picnic?).
Glen Close was pretty much the same age then as Reba is now...

Per Wikipedia, Reese Witherspoon is one month older than Kelli O'Hara.
What does it mean to be a movie star these days anyway? Seems like a person gets cast in a movie, then Hollywood says they are a star. Maybe its just me but seems like familiar movie stars aren't starring in big movies and tho I have liked Reese Witherspoon in some movies, most of her movies I haven't seen. Just seems like a lot of people who are starring in movies have very few credits and a lot of the movie stars whose names people know aren't starring in much, I guess because they aren't a sure thing anyway. So Balaban et al might as well cast people who maybe aren't that well known but who can sing wonderfully and really do the parts justice, like O'Hara, Szot and Sayre.

Posted: 6/6/12 at 10:53pmI think it depends on the budget, and I assume this would be fairly large budget, in which case Hollywood would still, IMHO, want at least one name (like they have with most previous recent big budget movie musicals).

Kelli was great in the role, and what a wonderful singer. I know its unrealistic but I'd love Hollywood to make one movie musical with people who can really sing and boy those 3 were perfect in those roles. I've only heard Reese Witherspoon sing in that one movie about Johnny Cash and even though she was helped by some technology I think she didn't seem to be much of a singer. Has she ever sung in anything else? RW can be a good actress I think but I haven't been interested in seeing anything she's done in quite a while.
I'm editing to add- I should say it's probably not Reese Witherspoon's fault she hasn't been in interesting movies lately, good roles for actresses aren't too common. I just loved Kelli O'Hara and the original cast and would love to hear those beautiful songs sung really well.

I'm glad Kelli's performance was preserved on film. She deserved that Tony, her performance was perfect.

McPhooey
Cameos for Laura and Kelli!!! I'm insulted on their behalf. Yeah sure, they can walk around with bedpans. Stand up for Broadway a little bit here, these were perfect performances!!! Claim Rodgers and Hammerstein for Broadway, for people who can really sing those gorgeous songs! This isn't imdb or Deadline, why do you care about bankable, really would that charming Jean Dujardin really be bankable anyway? Root for the home team at least here a little? Yeah, I know, it's unrealistic.
But Katherine McPhee, isn't she the weak link on that show? Sheesh.

Posted: 6/6/12 at 11:49pmThe sad thing is, that these remakes of older musicals Hollywood seems to have been considering, even more than the new ones, seem to be only going ahead if they benefit some star.

"Katherine McPhee would probably be in the running for Nelly."
She would need a year of personality lessons before she assumes the role. I just think she's a very boring actress.

Witherspoon as Nelllie sound great. Would love to see O'Hara in the movie as well, or Lauren Ambrose.
I'm tired of people who aren't movie stars not getting cast in movies. People who are movie stars got cast in big roles in movies when they were not movie stars. That's how they got to be movie stars. It has to start somewhere.
Who ever heard of Jessica Chastain until last year when she starred in (and aced) almost every movie released?
That being said, I'd be as interested in seeing Witherspoon as Nellie on film as I would in seeing O'Hara (not known in film) or Ambrose (known in film but not yet a movie star). My only prejudice is to talent (in this case musical as well as acting) and good casting.
