South Pacific, Boeing, Gypsy, Xanadu, ACL, The Fantasticks, Title Reviews#1

South Pacific: This thrilling new production has become the hottest ticket in town, and that's great news because this production is almost perfection, the musicians are fantastic and so is the cast, Kelli O'Hara deserved a Tony for her work as Nellie. (9/10)
Boeing Boeing: Or should I say "Boring Boring"?, well, although it is a funny play, and the actors are very good in it, I just find this play to be very dated, predictible and not shocking like it must have been years ago when it was 1st on Broadway. (4/10)
Gypsy: Patti LuPone gives a terrific performance, this classic brings you back to the old days, but I felt like it dragged at moments. The audience loved it, and it was nearly sold out. Patti's voice was in perfect shape, what a talented singer! (6/10)
Xanadu: This show was gay heaven, so much eye candy. Cheyenne Jackson is one of the best male singers I've heard. Kerry Butler is perfect for her part, and Curtis Holbrook rocked the house with his dancing and his tap number, such a cutie!
Mary Testa and Whoopi Goldberg were very funny, Whoopi can't sing to save her life, but you can tell she joined the show to have fun, and not to take it too seriously. Marty Thomas was amazing as well. The best show on Broadway? No way, but it's the most fun I've had in awhile. (8/10)
A Chorus Line: This show is perfection, I do think it's the best show currently on Broadway, too bad it's saying goodbye in a week. Mario Lopez was quite a surprise, I thought he nailed the role of Zack. Charlotte D'Amboise's last Tony-nominated performance as Cassie shows what a real Broadway diva is all about. Her acting, dancing, singing was perfect. The audience went crazy with her number. Im glad I got to witness this legendary performance with 2 BWW members. The entire cast was brilliant. (10/10)
The Fantasticks: This show is the longest running show in history for a reason, it's fantastic! The songs written by Tom Jones are terrific, and so is the music by Harvey Schmidt. Dennis Parlato reprises the role of El Gallo perfectly, John Thoman Waite, Michael Nostrand and Gene Jones are really perfect in every way(they all performed roles in the previous version of The Fantasticks at the Sullivan), Steven Routman was great, and newcomers Margaret Anne Florence, her acting skills, her youth, and rising soprano made the perfect Luisa, and Jordan Nichols, who played Matt, was terrific, his voice and acting were excellent, and being a cutie doesn't hurt either. Im thrilled to see this magical piece of American theatre, selling out on a Monday night. Audiences from all over the world filled The Snapple Theatre on Broadway and 50th.(10/10)
Title of Show: Very original new musical, with inspiring acting. Great show, very simple, and I loved it eventhough I usually enjoy larger casts and full orchestrations.(8/10)

Posted: 8/13/08 at 11:35amI'm sorry you didn't like Boeing-Boeing. It was one of my favorites from this past season. But thanks for sharing your reviews!

Posted: 8/13/08 at 12:07pmI have to say you kind of missed the point of Boeing, Boeing. Of course it's dated -- the production plays that up. And to suspect that it was "shocking" in its day is another miss -- it was never been to be shocking, or thought provoking, or anything else-- just a piece of fluff entertainment. Sorry you weren't entertained, which is its ONLY purpose -- I laughed my head off when I saw it in London and again on Broadway. If you hate silly farce, you'll hate Boeing, Boeing. Perhaps that was it.

About Boeing Boeing, it just didn't work for me, but most people seem to love this play.
I paid only us$ 20 to see it and I got to take a pic with Miss Baranski after the show, so it was worth it.
Nice meeting you too Jay! You never told me how was Drew Lachey in Spamalot?

Posted: 8/15/08 at 6:07pmMuscle, I saw you leaving the men's room at the St. James on Saturday night before the show started. Glad you enjoyed Gypsy! Did you see those two girls in center orchestra who gave Patti a standing O on her entrance? That cracked me up.

Well, it was definitly me, haha, I was there that Saturday night, yes, I noticed that some of those women in the in the center orchestra were a little too excited, LOL!
I loved the way that Patti enters the stage, but their excitement was a little too much, and somehow inappropiate since they interrupted the show.

Muscle;
I am a huge fan of Charlotte. I have been since I saw her in "Song And Dance". Did you ever get to see her Roxie in "Chicago" ?

Hey DAME, isn't it funny that Charlotte asked me the same question you are asking me now? No, I've never seen her in Chicago.
You are so lucky you got to see her in Song & Dance, she must have been brilliant, as usual, and I love that show. Charlotte was really the highlight of my trip. I'd recommend anyone who missed her in A Chorus Line to watch her number on that site we shouldn't mention...

Well; I wouldn't be surprised if they asked her to reprise it yet again. I would love that. I enjoyed reading your reviews. I also loved South Pacific but had one of the highlights of my theater going life when I saw Gypsy with Patti. I saw the tour of Chorus Line when it was in town a few months ago. It was just a tad dated for me. But enjoyable.
Glad you enjoyed your trip. LOVE YOUR HAIRCUT.

DAME, thanks for the compliments, and honestly, Im very glad that I got to see Patti in Gypsy, I think she is probably the perfect actress to play the role of Rose and I love the recording, as well as Bette Midler's version. I was just more moved by South Pacific, The Fantasticks and A Chorus Line during this trip, but Im definitly happy that I got to see Patti's performance, and well, her voice is in perfect shape.
Thanks for all the information on how to get South Pacific tix Korenglish! Kelli O'Hara, Matthew Morrison, and the rest of the cast were flawless in this show. A real gem. The musicians were fabulous too!
