I'm not sure what will be more fun to watch, this show or the controversy it will bring!

I saw this in Reidel's column this morning, Jordy.
"Says Parker of the musical's inspiration in the Post: "There's a lot of Mormon stuff in our work because Matt and I both grew up around a lot of Mormons...I've never met a Mormon I didn't like. They're really nice people. They're so Disney. They're so Rodgers and Hammerstein."
When did "Disney" become an adjective to refer to homophobic narrow minded hate mongers? Are we talking about the same Disney that I know and love?
I think that he's referring to the seemingly "clean cut, wholesome" thing a lot of people think of when they think of Mormons.
(BTW, Nobodys ever called me Jordy before. It's hot. lol)

There are probably at least 3 subtexts to Parker's comparison of Mormons to Disney/R&H.
There's the wholesome family thing, the rumored 'Disney was a racist/antisemite' thing, plus he's probably saying that Mormons are a touch gay, if closeted.
Fact is, if Parker is being quoted - especially about something controversial, he's probably making a joke of some sort.
Love those guys. I have no doubt this thing will be highly offensive. I can't wait.
I am extremely excited. I have no doubt this will be hilarious and controversial.
Trey Parker and Matt Stone have already lampooned the Mormon faith. They dedicated a whole episode to it, essentially. Parker is definitely employing some irony and sarcasm in that statement.
When was the last time a show on Broadway had protesters out side a theatre demanding the show be closed?
Can't wait to hear more about this, show.
^^ I know the original Jesus Christ Superstar was heavily protested. Interesting how many church groups have embraced the show since those days. I somehow doubt the same thing will happen to this show, but you never know.
I'm not sure of anything since then protested to close the show, but I know A Little Night Music was recently protested by PETA because of CZJ has worn fur in the past, and 33 Variations was protested because some crazy people really don't like Jane Fonda.

Interesting. I have to imagine this is the "new musical" listed by these authors as part of the NYTW summer season. I wonder if that will simply be an early try-out for a show already destined for Broadway? http://www.nytw.org/season_09_10.asp
Or would they pull it from NYTW and open right on Broadway? Curious to see what this means!
Wow. I am really looking forawrd to this. This has the potential to be hilarious beyond measure.
I can't begin to imagine the controversy this will generate though. Pickets at the theatre for sure! Maybe worse?
"and 33 Variations was protested because some crazy people really don't like Jane Fonda. "
was it all due to the people who still hang on to what she did in Vietnam? if people protested a show due to not liking someone, every show would have some sort of protesting going on.
I hope it causes a full blown riot. This is a must see for me. It is the convergence of so many things I love.
And, yeah, Parker is def cracking wise. He's being ironic but also Mormons will pretty much only allow themselves to watch Disney movies and The Sound of Music. They cannot handle anything more challenging than that. It's a fact. Mormons have all the direct to DVD Disney sequels and no Tarantino.

Yes Piper- Jane Fonda still draws protesters pretty much everywhere she goes, angry about her opposition to the Viet Nam war and her visit there. She has apologized, said she shouldn't have done it, admitted it was a mistake but it's not good enough. Apparently she still refuses to get into her time machine, journey back to the 1960's and make it right. Stubborn Liberal.

Better than a whole episode - a whole movie. Orgazmo, anyone?
Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes!
Thanks Joe.
It was a while ago, but in an interview with Peter Fonda he was talking about how at the time of it all she was hated and threatened and how the family felt the trickle down effect. He said it went on a very very long time and said "it still does" in some places. I guess she will never entirely be free of it.

even if that were possible , she probably wouldn't be forgiven by her life long opposers.
I am so excited for this. Because I *know* it's going to be funny. I mean, Trey Parker writing songs? It's gold.
Cannibal! The Musical was the beginning, and all though some of the lyrics were choppy, the best of the bunch has to be 'Trapper Song'. Catchy, but not quite there.
When he had Marc Shaiman on board for South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut, the lyrics were catchy, funny, and all around a huge satire to Broadway musicals.
I'm so excited for this, because it's going to be a hell-o of a lot better than Spamalot. Too bad they'll be going up against the Lord's spawn - Love Never Dies. :/
They may well destroy LND!
I vote this re-opens the Martin Beck Theatre!!!
This is going to be the greatest thing ever. I'm already buying tickets for the Pulitzer board on the night before the vote.

Love it.
They better not screw this up, because there is way too much talent involved for this to be bad.
I will be buying tickets the second presale begins.

It'll be fun to see the controversy for sure, but I'm so looking forward to this one.
This is the sort of thing that will get me to fly to New York. They are going to have to be careful about what cities they choose to tour in haha.

o...migod. MUST see! They are brilliant and I can't wait for this!
Wasn't there some talk of this for a while? Or some project like this that Cheyenne Jackson was attached to?
I recall Cheyenne Jackson mentioning he was doing a workshop of a Mormon musical by these guys, but then saying it's under wraps.
