So, what should Sutton Foster do next?

I think her touring with little women, a show that was a flop by all means would not be a great PR move for her. It is not going to launch her into the broadway legend category.

Posted: 6/17/05 at 2:03pmKristen Chenoweth looks like a movie star. That's why she was given a sitcom. Hollywood is biased that way. Sad but true. Sutton is much more character-y. Some critics find her performances "too big" for the stage -- so I can only imagine what she'd be like on film.

Posted: 6/17/05 at 2:04pmBeergoggles-I was not comparing Sutton and Kristin. I was referring to Kristin's self-titled sitcom, which was canceled after four episodes. After that fiasco, they would probably be hesitant to give a sitcom to a young Broadway star who is hardly a name outside of New York.

Little Women won't be "perceived" as a flop on the road.
Sutton stayed with the show on Broadway till the end and there is no reason to think that she wouldn't have stuck with it until the end of the year had it continued to run. It was clearly molded as a star vehicle for her -- and she apparently has no other offers lined up, I don't see how doing the first couple of legs of the tour would do anything but help her.

Posted: 6/17/05 at 2:35pmI remember reading somewhere that she said she had gotten offers for tv and/or movies, but she had no interest in anything other than the stage. She also said that she would like to do a straight play someday. Maybe that will be her next project?

Posted: 6/17/05 at 2:40pmSutton stayed with 'Little Women' to the end because the show closed before her contract was up. I don't think she should go on tour with 'Little Women' however, I could see her reprising her role in 'Thoroughly Modern Millie' on the new tour that starts in the fall. That would do her well as well as that show to have it's original Broadway star in the role. I kinda feel like if you are a hit in a hit show then you owe it to your fans to travel around the country and let them get a taste of the Broadway production, hence why Carol Channing will be coming down those damn stairs in every 'Hello Dolly' tour until it is turned into an escalator. I personally don't see Ms. Foster taking on a revival. Most performers that star in back to back original musicals want to continue in original musicals. There is something about creating a character that stays appealing no matter how many times you do it.

Posted: 6/17/05 at 2:42pmThe new tour of MILLIE is a non equity, stripped bare bus and truck, I can't imagine Sutton Foster headlining that. But I was frankly surprised that she didn't do the original Los Angeles engagment of the tour. That would have been smart.

Regarding Sutton in MARY POPPINS, I would love to see her take on the role but I would love it even more if Laura Michelle Kelly were able to start it off in New York, and after she wins her Tony and ticket sales drop a bit, they can bring Sutton in as a replacement.

I wonder how she would do in a Shakespeare's play. Could see her be: Juliet (Romeo and Juliet)
Ophelia (Hamlet)
Beatrice (Much Ado About Nothing)
Hermia or Helena (A Midsummer Night's Dream)
Katherina (The Taming of the Shrew)

Posted: 6/17/05 at 3:34pmEven though Disney is "looking at" Foster for Poppins, don't count on it happening anytime soon. They are in no hurry to bring it over to the US. They are fast-tracking "Tarzan" and "Little Mermaid" right now. The big issue is real estate. Both "Tarzan" and "Poppins" require big houses - houses such as New Amsterdam, Hilton, Palace, Gershwin, Broadway... That being said Sutton as Jane? Sutton as Ariel?...

My vote goes for her starring as Peggy Sawyer in a TV version of 42nd Street.
Also, for those who said she would be miscast as Mary Poppins...
I love Sutton, but when I heard "Sutton as Jo March"... I was a little afraid. I couldn't see her in the role. But for those of you who saw Little Women, you know she was a fabulous Jo, and VERY different than in her role as Millie. I've heard her say that MP is her dream part... I'd love to see her get the chance to play her at some point. I think she might just be supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.

Posted: 6/17/05 at 3:42pmOh, RoxieHart I beg to differ. I thought her portrayal of Jo was the exact same as Millie just wearing clothes in a different time period.

Posted: 6/17/05 at 3:52pmHmm... well, maybe once it got to NYC she had changed the characterization and she was more Millie-ish. (I saw it in previews at Duke.)

Posted: 6/17/05 at 3:52pmSomewhat OT: Disney isn't in a rush to push Poppins? That's surprising. I guess because they know it's not as much a kid friendly show as the movie is.

Posted: 6/17/05 at 3:58pmWell, after Ben Brantley's lukewarm reception of it (I believe he likened Laura Michelle Kelly to Joan Crawford?), can you blame them? Poppins, while it may be perfectly wonderful (I haven't seen it), may be a little too revisionist for American audiences.

I think it's funny how a number of responses have consisted of "she should either do a new show or a revival."
She's a Broadway actress. What else would she do? The only types of musicals are new or revivals. It just cracks me up.
