So, I walked passed the Barrymore Theatre and noticed that Speed The Plow has a new set of marquees. Instead of the one on on the awning that had the pictures of the three stars. It just has the shows logo. And the one that hangs above it that used to have a picture of the stars also just has the show logo along with a review and 4 stars form some paper.
I am sorry I don't have any pictures.
I saw the marquee last night...it looks awful. However, I understand that it would cost a lot of money to print up a new marquee with Norbert's picture, only to switch it up with William's picture a few weeks later. I wonder if they will still sell the window cards with Piven on them or print new ones? I hope the playbills are changed soon!

Does that mean Piven can still get a Tony Nomination?

Yeah, I guess it's a quick fix solution, but i wish they would have done something other than just clutter the marquee with the logo.
He'll be the one eligible, yes, but he won't get one.

They should have put Raul and Elizabeth's faces and a question mark for the third actor!

Here, I took some photos. The quote on top is from the AP. The four stars are from The Post.
I think they should just put a big sushi roll up on the marquee.
Does anyone know if the powers that be can petition one of the replacements (probably Macy) to be eligible in Jeremy's place? I'm assuming they could.
Anything is possible, Em. It'll be interesting to see what happens...
Worked for Larry Kert in Company.
Though I'm wondering because it's a limited run, if that'll play into their decision. Either way, eligible or not, Piven isn't getting nominated.
Oh, definitely not. But it would be nice to see someone who's saving the day, so to speak, be able to be recognized.
I don't blame them for getting Piven off of the marquee....and who can blame them for not wanting to dump more money when they were so close to breaking even...then took a huge hit with patrons demanding money back over Piven's departure.
You don't blame them for taking him off so they wouldn't lose more money to angry patrons? What about that little thing called false advertising? A lot of the pictures are still up on the entrance to the theater, but having a marquee with someone's name on it is different than a marquee suggesting that he or she is in the show.
Obviously, they needed a new "generic" marquee. I would have done that in the first place though. It's so weird to me, knowing how risky theatre is, that anyone would ever gamble to put names and pictures on the actual marquee when so many things can happen, and in this case did, and then you're suddenly finding yourself having to shell out more money for a new marquee. It'd put the names and pictures on the theatre dressings that are cheaper to replace.

Did they change the Playbill cover?
No, right now they're still using the old Playbills with full-page inserts. They say the company of STP is proud to welcome Norbert, and then have his headshot and bio.
Names, I don't think are so much an issue. They're commonplace, lots of shows do it and cast changes aren't exactly unusual. Pictures, though, are a little binding... especially when they're like, the size of a house.

Through all of this mess, it's heartening to see brouhaha be about a worthy play that is being given a fine performance. From an artistic standpoint, it warms my heart that the likes of Butz and Macy have come to the rescue -- says something about their dedication to their craft. As long as we have pros like the two of them involved, I wouldn't start tolling the funeral bells for Broadway yet. This whole experience is like an early Valentine.
I'm curious. Was Butz a suggestion of Esparza's or does he have a Mamet connection I'm unaware of?
Mamet's statement said both of the actors coming in were friends of his. Norbert has played this role before, too, I believe.

WOW...I only just realized they didn't put the names back up on the marquee. To me, that would be kind of a bummer. Really just becuase Elizabeth and Raul have worked so hard and they deserve it. But I'm sure, they are totally understanding and accepting of the special situation.
