"Am I the only one that really likes this show the way it is and is kind of offended that they make it a huge joke every once and a while? I dunno, the whole idea just kind of offends me."

Then don't go see it. It's that simple.

Am I the only one that really likes this show the way it is and is kind of offended that they make it a huge joke every once and a while? I dunno, the whole idea just kind of offends me.

Difference of opinion. Meanwhile, I found that in some aspects, the changes marked an improvement.

For example, the "I love you song". While I like it on its own, it seems to come way too late to make sense to me. You have half the show hilarious, and then it gets really into it and is still funny. Even with "I speak six languages" being about a child who has real issues, it remains light just like the rest of the show. And then the I Love You song comes in, and has innuendos to really negligent parents and becomes serious, and it feels slow and out of place with the rest of the show. Not that "Seasons of Love" would make sense in every performance, but even just the change to have the mother singing while in bandages seemed more in the spirit of the show in general.

I just found the show more consistently funny with the "adult" version. It wasn't even that the jokes were adult, so much as there were more jokes in this Spelling Bee than the normal one. Especially in the second half.

Though I love this version of the show, I like the original one better. Some of the stuff they did last night I felt was too much and over the top.

I really agree about the "I love you" song being way too serious, too late in the show. Even though it's a beautiful song, it somehow breaks the mood that has been established, as this being a light, silly, funny, sweet show. The notion of the neglecting mother being in Hollywood getting a makeover is, ironically, a lot more significant to Olive's "abandonment" issues, than the whole spiritual trip to India thing. And "Seasons of Love" was really, really great, though I agree they can't get away with that in every show.

Spelling Bee is always a fun show, but the adult only versions just add more jokes. Some of them may be a little over the top, I'll admit, but they're still in the spirit of the show. Even in the normal version, there are some slightly racist/inappropriate jokes. For the adults only, they just step it up a notch. And I, for one, really enjoy it. This is not a show that has EVER taken itself seriously, so I see no harm in doing this sort of thing every once in awhile.

Hi- this one sounds even better than the last one (which I was able to attend). I am curious about the Seasons of Love....did they do all of it with the solos and everything? I bet Derrick and Lisa would kick butt on those solos.

I hope they do this again.I will try to make the next one if possible. Thanks!

Seasons of Love was just the cast breaking out into:

"Measure in Lo-ove, Lo-o-o-ove,
Measure in Lo-ove, Lo-o-o-ove,
Measure in Lo-ove, Lo-o-o-ove,
Measure in Love.
Seasons of, Love!"

Full with clapping along (by the audience).

I'm also going to that one. Cause I...have no life. lol

Actually, I wasn't supposed to go last night. I'd bought tickets for the next adults only. But then we found out Jay Reiss was making an appearance, so we scrounged up the money to go last night. It was worth it.

I'm going because I love Bee and think it's great when they do special shows.

One of these days, I hope they rearrange the show and have a different winner, just to change things up a bit.

It would take so much work, but it would be fun if a different person won every night, so the show was always changing.

Do they post the dates anywhere?

I'm trying to figure out which shows in SF are adult shows. :)

Thanks!

They post them in advance. As of now, none of the performances in San Francisco are designated for adult performances.

Reuters now has an article on the adult shows.

"Asked for the definition of "coenaculum," actor Jay Reiss, who played the role of the school vice principal, said correctly that it was a dining room where the Last Supper was held, but this led to a joke about Jews leaving tips at restaurants."

Um, it was cenacle.

But fun to see the article anyway! Thanks for posting!
