Whatever happened to the Spider Man musical that Julie Taymor was working on?

Posted: 4/4/07 at 10:57pmI don't know and I don't care. We don't need a Spiderman musical, but the new movie trailer didn't make me want to see the new one. I think it's going to just annoy the crap out of me.

Posted: 4/4/07 at 11:32pmGood grief, that has to be the worst idea I have heard of for a stage production. I could understand a Dr.Who broadway show(there have been several stage productions of the voyages of The Doctor and his TARDIS,why not a broadway version?) or if a producer had REAL guts and enugh money a Klingon adaptation of King Lear. But a Spider Man musical sounds like a very bad April Fools joke but for the fact that it is well after the first. What would the songs be 'MJ has tied my heart up in my own webs'or'standing on the cieling I can see more clearly'? Seriousely, a Spider Man musical would be a suicidal production to get behind. The Dr.Who idea would surely be the best chance at a show that a more diverse audience would attend.Any perspective Authors reading this should concider this idea,I would be more than willing to assist in any way possible any serious effort.

Posted: 4/5/07 at 11:12pmWhat kind of music would go with a show like that?
#7re: Spider Man Musical
Posted: 4/6/07 at 1:12amAs you can read in the other thread, Bono and The Edge of U2 were to pen the score.

Maybe it would go something like this?
My hand swelling up, a spider had bit me!
The room spun around, the floor came up to hit me.
On waking I found that there was somethng amiss
Instead of in my palm, some white goo shot from my wrist!
I cannot think straight, my thought are all mingling
And now my newfound spidey senses are tingling.
I gotta find MJ, she'll let me confide her
I mean, ohmahgod! I'm turning into a spider...
OK. Or not. I may have to turn in my software license for Final Draft after that.

Posted: 4/6/07 at 10:20amThank You SHAKESPEAREAN .Preposterouse? yes, but those lyrics are the very kind you would need for a SpiderMan musical. News of the concideration of a SpiderMan show is (if it is true) evidence of a growing sense of insanity in the world of the theater.Of course there was a SuperMan show,a simple parody the world wants to forget, there was talk of a Captain America show. But SuperHeroes and the stage is a poor marriage. In this period in wich purse strings are bieng tightened on show budgets shouldn't a little forethought be put forward before even persuing this sort of characters rights?

With a good enough creative team, you can turn ANYTHING into a musical. And SpiderMan is full of enough angst and drama that of all the comicbook heroes, he'd probably make quite a good musical. With a good enough creative team. :P

Posted: 4/6/07 at 10:51amThanks, Ghostlight, my services as a Lyricist are quite reasonable (I work for cheetohs and live on cynicism). I also have to agree with Weez that Spiderman typifies best the angst and drama of your classic comicbook hero and, given the popularity of the recent films, would be the most viable should we have to have a comic book musical. Never underestimate the marketing superpowers of Stan Lee. On the other hand, "It's a Bird! It's a Plane! It's Superman!", directed by Hal Prince, survived 129 performances on Broadway and a whole lot more in high schools. One never knows, do one?

There was a lot of bitching and whining about the Batman musical but "Gotham City" is the most amazing piece of music I've heard from a show since "Requiem For Evita"

Posted: 4/13/07 at 5:59pmThe Spider-Man Musical is still happening. With Bono and Edge writing music, and Julie Taymor directing. Give it about 6 months and it should be out.

It's things like this that make me fear for the state of the American theatre.
SeanMartin, I got the theme song stuck in my head too...

SEEKING:
[PETER PARKER] Male, late teens to early 20's, Caucasian. A bullied, high school senior in Queens passionate about all things Science, and infatuated with Mary Jane Watson to the point of near-paralysis. Earnest, ethical, and frequently relying on his wry, self-effacing sense of humor to get out of scrapes, he was bitten by a genetically altered spider in Norman Osborn's Lab soon before graduating and becomes after trials and tragedy a crime-fighting superhero. He struggles daily to balance the responsibilities his dual identity demands, as well as with the constant temptation to exploit the powers he has inherited. The burden of being a superhero, his guilt for his role in his uncle?s death, as well as his debilitating crush on Mary Jane all weigh heavily upon him. Great pop/rock voice.
[MARY JANE] Female, late teens to early 20s, Caucasian. Sweet, intelligent, affectionate, compassionate, with a well-developed, wry sense of humor. Her power, her luminosity, arises from the unadorned simplicity and groundedness of her presence. She is desperate to get out of Queens, to get away from her abusive father, and make a name for herself as an actress. Great pop/rock voice.
[ARACHNE] Female, 20-35 years old, any ethnicity. A beautiful, boastful young woman turned into a spider for her hubris and lack of respect for the gods. She subsequently appears to Peter Parker and the audience as in turn a powerful spider-woman who comes from another time to inspire Peter; an otherworldly lover; a bride; a terrifying (and sexy) dark goddess of vengeance; a dance partner in a charged and violent spiders dance of death; and, finally, a lonely, fragile young woman. Possesses an ethereal, unique, gorgeous singing voice. Strong Celtic, Balkan style, e.g., Sinead O'Connor. Outside the box ideas are welcomed. Could be someone from the music industry.
[NORMAN OSBORN] Male, 50s, Southern. A brilliant scientist deeply devoted to his wife Emily and to the potential of science to improve the world. Always thinking, always tinkering, always talking, he is a dynamo, a folksy whirlwind of energy cut from the same cloth as Ted Turner. An experiment gone wrong mutates him into an unholy terror called the Green Goblin contemptuous of humanity and very much insane. STRONG comic chops and strong character voice.
[J. JONAH JAMESON] Male, 50s. Brash, stubborn, and a throwback from another era, the mustachioed, cigar-chomping, tyrannical publisher of the Daily Bugle is always after the headline that will sell more papers. He is unrelenting in his hatred for Spider-Man, whom he sees as a vigilante and a bane to NYC. Need STRONG comic chops.
[GEEK CHORUS] Three teenage boys and one girl who meet to ritualistically retell the greatest Spider-Man stories. They have encyclopedic knowledge of the last forty years of Spider-Man comic books. They are inveterate role-playing, over-enthusiastic, idealistic, air-guitar-wielding, argumentative, earnest, hyper-serious geeks. Strong comic chops and strong singing voices. Any ethnicity.

Ohh, I smell an interesting theatrical device.
Chill out you guys. I think the show has great potential. People have already pointed out the great drama inheirent in the story. And with ARTISTS like Taymor, Bono, and the Edge working on this, I think it could really be something. Depending on how you do it, I believe anything can be musicalized, and this is just another story. This show dosen't strike me as one of those o-so-annoying marketing musicals like The Wedding Singer or Legally Blonde. And being somewhat familiar with Bono and what he's like, I don't think he'd be doing this if it was deviod of artistic integrity.
