Hi! So for my 16th birthday, I convinced my parents to buy my twin, my older sister(who is 21), and myself tickets to see Rachel Potter in spring awakening in Florida. Neither of my sisters (nor parents) know anything about the show. What should I tell them? I don't know too much about it, besides for the fact that it is obviously made for mature audiences. I've read reviews saying you should be like 18, but others say like 13. If I'm mature for my age, is it appropriate to see??? Thanks!

I think you would be fine watching it. The show explores Homosexuality.Abuse.Masturbation.Sex.Abortion.Suicide and a few other things. It's basically a long episode of Degrassi set to music and singing.

So Lauren Bacall me, anything goes! *wink*

It's Degrassi with bare breasts and flogging.

Shouldn't the time for questions been BEFORE you made them purchase tickets?

Are you allowed to watch R-rated movies? Then no problem. If your folks have a problem with that, they are going to have a big problem with this. There is a simulated sex scene on stage, which seems more intense than watching one on film.

Is is inappropriate? -- that depends strictly on your point of view.

I'm 21, and I'd be uncomfortable watching the show with my parents, even after having been around the block a few times. But that's just me.

I'm not sure, but the OP made it sound like the tickets were just for the girls. (Which alleviates most of the problems.)

I'm also going to suggest that if, at 16, you worry about not being mature enough, you probably aren't. The cd isn't sold without warnings, their are many mature situations, language and themes. I would suggest that if you are very conservative or religious, you are likely going to be offended, as well.

Oops. Thanks for correcting me dramamama (I apparently am too tired to be reading straight!)

But yes. It might be too sensitive for someone with a conservative upbringing. Otherwise I think you and your sisters should be fine Spring Awakening??? (I myself first saw it at age 17 when the first national tour came around....I've loved it ever since!)

The fitst time I ever heard about the show, I was 13. I begged my mom to get tickets and just she and I went for my 14th birthday. It was fine. I knew what was coming; she knew what was coming and it opened up a discussion between both of us.
Flash forward a few years and my cousin became involved in a college production and my dad, knowing how much I loved the show, got us tickets. He is much more about 'sheltering' than my mother, even though I was 17 at the time. My mom warned him serveral times, but he was convinced it would be toned down because it was a school production. Alas, it wasn't, except Wendla had a bra on when her dress was ripped off because HER own father threw a fit (she was a senior; 22 years old). Luckily, I ended up in one row with my other cousin and my dad sat behind us with my aunt and uncle, so I wasn't sitting right next to him. Even so, he was very shocked and uncomfortable by intermission.

My point: Make sure everyone KNOWS what there going into. If they know and are okay, then I'm sure you'll enjoy the show.
