From the clips I've heard, the music sounds great and I really want to buy the CD. However, I've never seen the show and won't have an opportunity to do so in the near future. Is it hard to follow the cast recording without having seen the show, or will I still be able to enjoy it?

IT'S AMAZING!
Buy it anyway! I not very hard to understand because the songs work as interior monologues for the characters so they're not entirely based on plot.

I actually think the cast recording is more enjoyable without the context of the show... you won't be able to follow the storyline at all, but it won't bother you because the music stands up on its own.
I had a friend listen to the CD and she had a pretty good hold of the plot by the end. I disagree with those that say you won't understand the musical.

I haven't seen the show, and I like the CD.
You should be able to get an outline from the recording and fill in the bits of confusion by reading a synopsis.
If I'm remembering correctly, "The Guilty Ones" appears out of order from the actual show on the CD, but all other songs are in the show order. I think it appears in the first act in the show, whereas on the CD, it would seem it's in the second act - after "Don't Do Sadness/Blue Wind". Can anyone verify?

"Guilty Ones" is the opening song of the second act, "Don't Do Sadness" follows.
Thanks!
I bought it this past Tuesday and I like it. Some songs are BLAH and a few lyrics are HORRIBLE, but overall I like it.
I bought the cd didn't have a clue about the show and loved it and completely understood what it was about...
