Caught the tour in Orono, Maine last night. Heartbreaking, beautiful, powerful, worth it. Already knew the music and story going in, so expected to love it and did. Especially loved Melchior, Wendla and Mort(sp?). But the whole cast was outstanding and knocked it out of the park. Musicians nailed the score. Purposely jabbed the palm of my left hand with my right middle fingernail during the saddest part to keep the tears from flowing in the theater. Now have a huge residual cry in me that seriously needs to come out. Seems the best theater is often the most heartbreaking. So glad I made the effort to see this. Just gorgeous.

Hope, I love that you had such an emotional reaction. My advice is to let it out in the theatre. I find it so cathartic to cry during the show if I need to.

I WANT to be able to let the tears flow in the theater. But I'm not used to crying in front of people so I hold back. I'd like to just let it go though, quietly of course, but still. Maybe someday soon. Thanks for your post. Yeah, the play hit me hard, which is good.
I recently saw this tour - I have owned the cast recording since it came out but I had never really gotten around to seeing it... Although I'm glad I did, I was very much underwhelmed. I have friends who have seen it 20 or 30 times and I honestly don't know how they sit through it so often (but I am also a repeat offender for several shows so I can' t really judge). Elizabeth Judd is incredible. Her voice is pure and she sings this score effortlessly. Courtney Markowitz is stunning as Ilse. I had nothing to compare her to but whenever she was onstage she grabbed my attention. His name escapes me but the boy who played Moritz was wonderful. I wasn't fond of Melchior... He seemed very weak vocally, but that is just my opinion. I think my favorite part of the show was Sarah Kleeman, who played the adult women. She was wonderful. I think what frustrates me about this show is that they introduce story lines that I am so interested in and then they drop them... And there is no character development. My 13 year old sister was very emotional during the performance but it didn't affect me at all.

littlegreen, I can understand your frustration-the show is more like a character study than a true narrative, linear story. Many intense contexts are sung about and then let go of.
Groff is hard to top as a Melchior, there is no way around that. The understudy I got was quite a letdown.
@Hope-I didnt cry in a theatre for some time for the same reasons, but now I do. It is good to be impacted by theatre even when it is painful sometimes. :)
