OMIGOD. This has got to be the WORST show I've ever seen. Saw it today. The talent is good but wasted on a horrendous script.
AWFUL,AWFUL,AWFUL.
I mean, really, really bad.
That's my two cents (and there were hardly any people in the audience...empty mez and less than half filled orchestra).

the play is very much a highly regarded, albeit banned, play and the musical, fromw hat i remember of the play, took a LOT directly from the play. Were you bothered that the songs were staged as though they took place in characters' heads?
And when I saw it, the orchestra was packed and the mezz was a little under half full. This show will rely on word of mouth. Frankly, it is one of the best nights and most well done shows that I have seen in a VERY long time and is now one of my favorite shows.

Care to give us any reasons as to why it was so "AWFUL,AWFUL,AWFUL" and "really, really, bad?"
Nothing wrong with not liking the show, that's your opinion. But if you're going to trash it that much, at least support said opinion...

I was about to say the same thing DRSislove.
Missy2--would you mind being a tad more mature and elaborating on what exactly you found problematic. It is pretty easy to blame the book, but I would respect your opinions just a *tad* more if they were phrased in ways that made them seem as though YOU yourself respected them and wanted them to be heard and appreciated. Just my 2¢
I, for one, saw it Off-Broadway, adored it, but I am always eager to hear other opinions on it as it is controversial. heck, when I saw it the people sitting next to me militantly stormed out during intermission, but that had seemed to have more to do with the fact that people were somewhat yelling at them because rhey were loudly eating and crinkling wrappers, or so I thought.

Posted: 11/26/06 at 9:56pmwell then, you must have been the bad luck charm to have the very 1st audience from what I heard who did not stay and stand for 10 minutes after the show to witness 4 encores of bows.

It wasn't one of the greatest things I've ever seen. It wasn't one of the worst things I've ever seen. I think the mixture of ancient dialogue and modern lyrics was what turned me off. It was a very bland show. I know the bulk of the crowd is going to disagree with me, but that whole "teen angst" thing has been done.

the audience seemed lass than enthusiastic? really now?
That goes against what every person at every performance has said. The night I went, the audience was timid at first, really trying to find their way into the piece, but reactions grew as the show went on, the cast recieved cheers when they entered for act two, as opposed to when they entered for act one, and by the end of teh show, the cast had the audience begging for more.

Amneris- I was thinking the same thing. Most every review I've read has stated how well-received the show seemed to be.

Posted: 11/26/06 at 10:00pmHa Ha, Amneris. I didn't understand the sarcasm in your post until I searched Missy2 and saw all her rabid posts praising "Wicked" to the skies. It all makes sense now. For what it's worth, I thought "Spring Awakening" was one of the most brilliant things I have seen in a long long time.

Geez, people on this site really don't like it when one is not enthusiastic about a particular show.
It was contrived and forced. My sister walked out at the intermission but my friend and I figured we'd give it a shot.
The performances were good but the story and how it was told was ridiculous.
That is what we thought.
And bad luck charm or whatever. There was no standing ovation except for somebody who was a relative of someone in the cast and the rest of the audience departed quickly. Sorry, that's the way it was.
Anyway, again, everyone can have an opinion....

I am in LOVE with Spring Awakening. The actors are incredible, the show is incredible, the music is breathtaking and the set is pretty damn cool.
Oh and who is this Idina Menzel person anyway? I thought her name was Eyedin Menzelopolous

"AWFUL,AWFUL,AWFUL.

With word use and spelling like that I have a hard time believing you are over 10. You probably didn't get what is going on because your parents haven't given you "the talk" yet.

#22re: Spring Awakenings
Posted: 11/26/06 at 11:07pmI don't regularly post but after reading this I have to. Spring Awakening may not be my favorite show of all time but it is absolutely brilliant in many ways. The contemporary rock score is great and the harmonies are really tight. The cast is compromised of people with magnificent voices. The modern choreography was refreshing to watch and the lighting and costumes were fantastic. I don't know what performance you saw but it may have been an off night. The show is truly wonderful.

I just want to say that when I clicked on this post title I was really hoping it was going to be people sharing stories about their own puberties and various sexual discoveries, you know, their "spring awakenings". Because that would have cracked me up.
On a side note, I saw the musical "Spring Awakening" tonight and thought it was amazing. December 12th is not soon enough for a cd. An it was so wonderful to see Pheobe Strole on stage again, who I went to college with. Score another point for NYU.
