Geez, people on this site really don't like it when one is not enthusiastic about a particular show.
No, its not that. Its just if you are going to start an entirely new thread, people expect a full reveiw, and not just "I hated/loved it". And people will be slightly more nasty if said undeveloped opinion goes against popular opinion. Plus, your battling a bit of a Wicked prejudice here.
I think you're all expecting a tad too much from someone who can't even get the name of the show right. Thanks for your thoughtful critique, missy. I'll take it from where it comes.
"Maybe I missed something (and so did the rest of the audience who seemed less than enthusiastic)....but I really just didn't like any of it. Oh well. To each his own!"
If it was a typical Sunday matinee crowd...they are notoriously quiet. Add that to the fact that it was the Sunday matinee after a major holiday and I am sure they were all on life support. Give it another shot.

Phoebe Strole was my favorite younger female cast member. I loved this show, and the songs are still stuck in my head. When I saw the show on Friday, people were applauding "the Bitch of Living" for 2+ minutes, there was whistling and hollering...it was fantastic. I have to say, all of Moritz's songs were amazing, I was absolutely floored by "I don't do Sadness."
I saw Spring Awakening last night 7:00 p.m.
The house was packed. I didn't notice empty
seats.
The music was very good which I enjoyed very
much. The acting was excellent.
Would I see it again, No.
It just didn't do anything for me except
for the music which I liked very much.
Thats it for my view, I'm tired, long weekend!
I too REALLY enoyed it...the night I saw it the audience's applause literally forced the cast back on stage for a bow (some were putting their costumes back on)..now..while I didn't think it deserved THAT I was thrilled to be a part of it and applaude the mega talent I saw on stage!
BWW has Spring Awakening playing to 42% filled houses!?!?
is this true!?
Yes, check the weekly grosses, it is doing pretty bad.
However, it hasn't opened yet, so it still has a chance.
Everyone I know who's seen it talks wonders about it, so word of mouth could certainly change these numbers.
when Jersey Boys first started previews, it was comp central/running between 36%-50% and the word of mouth/reviews shot it into stardom. I hope this happens for some of the new shows this year.

The fact that it's playing in a cavern doesn't really help it.
i just thought it was sorta funny how everyone was talking about how packed the theater was when THEY went to see it. and it's playing to 40% full houses.

Funny, everyone I've spoken to who has seen it said that the mezzanine was empty. It certainly was when I saw it.

I find that strange too. People who went pretty recently said that it was pretty full.
Considering my best friend is in this show and I saw it when it was still playing at its off-broadway venue at the Atlantic, like any previewing show it will have it's packed houses and its not so packed houses. Some comps have been given out and some nights have really been sold out though. But when I speak to her each night I get the scoop. Recently, she informed me that they had not just only a standing ovation, but they had to encore and bow 3 times. That's pretty impressive.
Sure, everyone is entitled to their opinion. It is American after all, but this show has absolutely incredible music. I loved it, not just because my friend was in it, but because the raw emotion of it(and since i'm a teenager) really hit close to home. My boyfriend who saw it with me at the Atlantic, isn't quite the fan of it, but even he who is a performer can't deny the incredibly music that is in this show. And when I saw it in June..There was not an empty seat in the Atlantic Theater, and not a single person left.
Although its being sold at 45-49% as of now, I feel that deep down people who will open theirselves up to what they believe is 'racy' or 'inappropriate' to find the true beauty in a show like that. It takes risks. Not saying its like RENT risk-taking because theyre two completely separate musicals and you can't even COMPARE them.
But this show has an incredible cast, incredible music, and I think it will do well once it officially opens.
Thats my two cents!
On Sunday night 11-26 it was full.
But then you have to remember it was
a Holiday weekend.
I didn't think it was terrible. The Music
was good. I just don't think it's going to
attract the older audience. People around
us were in the late 40's and 50's and they
were complaining which I found very rude.
Wait until after the show then talk among
yourselves what you enjoyed or didn't.
Some people just don't know how to act.

this is the first real bad review ive heard of the show thus far. i havent seen it myself...yet. i do hear its biggest downfall is that it tries to mix mordern day rock music with the otherwise traditional like nature of the show. I heard from a lot of people who had seen it either on or off broadway that it is an amazing experiance and im really interested in seeing for myself.

I saw it last week and was very excited after all I'd heard. While I found it interesting and original, as well as well performed and directed, I didn't understand what all the hype is about. Cute kids who are all solid performers. Good enough music. Interesting take on a classic play. I just didn't buy into it being the revolutionary piece of theater I've heard some make it out to be. It's a good night of theater.
Sadly, I think the fact that people are so overwhelmingly excited about this piece clearly points out the sad state of recent shows.
I liked Spring Awakening (no 's')
Good night of theater.

Wow. I couldn't agree more with the original poster, though certainly all opinions are welcome.
The idea of taking the original play, groundbreaking in its own time, keeping it in its original setting, and adding the expressions of the young characters' feelings through pop songs is just brilliant to me. There's nothing else like this show on Broadway, and it definitely deserves to be checked out. Plus, especially if you're a student, there are several ways to see the show inexpensively (on-stage seating -- which I can't wait to try out -- and rush). When I saw the show, the orchestra was full, but I didn't look up to the mezzanine. The audience response at the end was the most incredible response I've seen. The audience applauded so long to an empty stage that the actors had to return.
Certainly it's not a show for everyone, and I agree that it will rely on word of mouth, but I really think it'll take off once young people spread the word about it the way they did for "Rent" and once the reviews are out (as long as they're as positive as they were for the off-Broadway engagement at the Atlantic).
Anyway, "Spring Awakening" and "Grey Gardens" this season have brought back my absolute belief that Broadway can still attract brilliant work. Off-Broadway is a great testing ground. I wish I'd seen both of these in their original forms.
Spring Awakening is flat out entertaining. I am 50 years old and loved every minute of that show. Obviously allot of people on this board are in theatre or are aspiring actors. I can't help but sense a bit of jealousy from some of you. To the masses I say "Go see Spring Awakening for yourself, it is big time entertainment"
