"Spring Awakening:" I saw it this evening for the first time (and not the last.) It is extraordinary.
"Company:" Good, but not exceptional except for Raul Esparza.
Both shows are groundbreaking, one in terms of reinventing a classic that reinvented musical theater when it was new, and the other in terms of reinventing musical theater again.

Ahhh, I too was faced with this decision, but add Grey Gardens into the mix. Grey Gardnes vs. Company vs. Spring Awakening and only enough money for one...
I chose Spring Awakening, and was extremely happy with my choice. I loved the show and enjoyed every millisecond of it... and I just can't say enough about how talented the cast was (and friendly too!)!
But, of course, now that I am returning to NYC in June, I have to decided between Company and Grey Gardens... gah!
Anyway, i'd say Spring Awakening, although i have yet to see Company.

Posted: 1/7/07 at 1:03amI love all the music from Company but have never seen it performed. I understand from my research, that this perfromance is a little different and it has gotten mixed reviews. I also have heard some music from Spring, and have it's reviews too. I know I am being vague, but I love all musical theatre types, just not sure if either show would be worth my money. I will be in NY for 7 days and am seeing 5 shows: Chorus Line, Apple Tree, Beauty and the Beast (being dragged to this one), Drowsy Chaperone and either Company or Spring.

Welcome to my trip to NYC in November. I was there for two days and had the opportunity to see 4 shows. Instead of allowing me to see another wonderful show that was getting rave reviews, my family dragged me to Beauty and the Beast. Ick. The Lunt-Fontanne is like a day care at recess. Sarah Uriarte-Berry was great, as was Donny Osmond... but gosh it seemed so tired.
Anywho, yeah, Company is a minimal production as Sweeney was last year at the Eugene O' Neill (which is, ironically, where Spring Awakening now resides... oh its so wonderful!). The actors play their own instruments, as i'm sure you know. Though I have heard wonderful things about this production, I still say that Spring Awakening is just not to be missed. The young cast is so brilliant, and the actors playing the adults (Stephen Spinella and Christine Estabrook) are simple phenomenal. I thank God every day that I saw this musical.
But it simply comes down to which music you like better, I spose!

Grey Gardens is the more intelligent show.

Posted: 1/7/07 at 1:29amSpring Awakening. Company is a great show, but Spring Awakening is a show that more people can relate to and touches more people you could say.

Save your money on both: SPRING will probably be at TKTS by the time you make your next trip to NY (if it isnt already), and COMPANY, frankly, isnt worth the expense.
Go explore the possibilities off- and off-off-Broadway. The shows may not be as polished, but it's usually far more interesting theatre.

Do we really need yet ANOTHER thread with this same question?

There will probably a half dozen more before the month is out.

A lot of people seem to have this dilemma. I love both shows very, very much but to tell you the truth, the only reason I would go to see this production of Company would be to see Raul Esparza's performance.
Go with Spring Awakening IMO. You won't be disappointed!

I'm surprised so many people are saying that the only thing exceptional about this production of Company is Raul Esparza. I would have to strongly disagree. He's the highlight of the production, but I think the entire show is so intelligent, witty, and moving, all at the same time and some of the staging is just breathtaking (as are the orchestrations). To me, it's one of the number one things not to be missed.
I suppose it depends on your age, though, really. Most teenagers and young adults would probably find it difficult to understand and relate to Company while I'm sure Spring Awakening is right up their alley as it's aimed at teenagers.

I also have to disagree that Raul is the only great part of COMPANY. Heather Laws, Elizabeth Stanley, and Kristin Huffman all stood out to me, even more than Raul. The cast is extremely talented, and the music is gorgeous! My only problems with COMPANY were that some scenes were a bit long (such as the scene between Joanne and Bobby) and that sometimes I had a hard time hearing the actors...from Row C Orch. But that's all okay because overall I very much enjoyed COMPANY
I have not seen SPRING AWAKENING yet, but I reccomend seeing COMPANY, because COMPANY is not doing so great at the box-office, so I feel its closing might be sooner than you think...
So go with COMPANY!

Btw, I also wanted to add that I am a young teenager, and I didnt find COMPANY difficult to understand at all. It speaks so well about relationships in general, and it was so interesting to find adults I know in the characters onstage, if you know what I mean
It was very honest and real, and very classy theatre. And very funny, too!
And that is my COMPANY speech. :)

Posted: 1/7/07 at 11:11amI am NOT a teenager, and I enjoyed "Spring Awakening" far more than "Company." The themes of both shows are universal, but what makes SA so extraordinary is that it can speak so clearly and directly to anyone who is even remotely human. "Company" is clinical and cerebral, SA is savage and goes right for the heart.

I've seen the show twice, once early in previews and once a few weeks ago - and both times I have experienced close to zero emotional connection to the show. While I love the music, and more or less returned for that reason only, I felt completely isolated emotionally.

its funny, I've heard other people say that about it too. Which is obviously totally fine, no one can control how a show makes them feel. Its just interesting to me because I was so... NOT emotionally cold from it. In fact, I practically havn't been able to stop thinking about it since! For me it was just... really, really, really emotional. I cant even exactly pinpoint why, except that obviously the story is MEANT to be really sad. I guess a lot of it is that 1)with moritz especially, I could relate to how he was feeling. And thats not to say I've ever failed out of school or anything like that, but its just.. I know there have been PLENTY of times where I've stressed out about grades. And seeing the show just made me realize.. its so STUPID that we put so much focus on a GRADE. So, yeah, that part really got to me, and then 2)obviously the ending...just... the fact that she was so innocent was mostly what made it so sickening for me.
so, I dont know, I just found the story really moving :)

Posted: 1/7/07 at 11:50amDon't miss Spring Awakening- most people from teens to parents will connect and relate to the pain and joy of growing up. The cast and staging are terrific, and the soaring music will stay with you long afterward.

Thank God! I thought it was only me. While I appreciated the music, I thought the show was one of the most predictable pieces that I've ever seen. I sat there saying now this is going to happen and then that is going to happen and sure enough it did. I felt nothing for the characters so it did not matter who died and how. I think it is a highly overrated piece of theatre and I would choose Company over it any time.
