Spring trip to NYC

Coming to town in 2 weeks and have the opportunity to see a total of four shows

Debating what to see this trip Normally I have everything bought and planned but been depressed lately and just not sure why not into it all I am sure that will change when I arrive

So far I bought American Pyscho Suggestions for others? I may do rush and lottery for the first time for shows

I would definitely see The Color Purple and She Loves me. Both shows have unbelievable casts and I would suspect Cynthia Erivo will win the Tony. If she doesn't, Laura Benanti probably will. The Color Purple is moving and emotional. It's much better than the original staging (although I only saw that on tour). She Loves Me is a classic fun romantic musical. I was grinning the whole time.

Narrowing it down from the others is tough. What kind of shows do you like? Just musicals? Do you want to see shows you're not likely to see on tour? Some others that I've really liked have been Fun Home, Something Rotten, School of Rock, Fiddler, the King and I, Blackbird, and Eclipsed. They're all just so different.

I've loved both The Color Purple and She Loves Me- very different but both so good. Shuffle Along was good but slightly less good in the book in my opinion, but I went to see Audra live and it was totally worth it. I also saw Hamilton, but I understand how that might not be in your list (I had the tickets since August). As far as plays, I'd suggest The Humans or Eclipsed.

Play wise, if you want to see a masterclass in acting, Frank Langella in the Father should not be missed. Musical to see just for a fun time would be Rotten

I completely agree with the other posters who recommended Color Purple and She Loves Me .... both shows are fantastic. I have seen pretty much everything this season except Disaster, Tuck Everlasting and Eclipsed. Excluding Hamilton, my top show recommendations would be Color Purple, She Loves Me, The Crucible, Dear Evan Hansen plus a couple of the shows that have been around for awhile so you may have already seen them ... King and I, Curious Incident and Fun Home.

Since Hamilton is pretty impossible unless you have a lot of money to spend, I suggest She Loves Me, Fun Home and Curious Incident. All amazing shows, with great books, and the two musicals have great scores.

Some of the best shows that I'd recommend (besides Hamilton) would be The King and I, Fiddler on the Roof, Curious Incident, and Fun Home. American Psycho looks like it has potential but I have my reservations.

Sounds like She Loves Me is high up there. It wasn't not even on my lists. I will research it

Hamilton but that's not in the cards. Ha

I was thinking Tuck Everlasting, never read the book but seemed interesting.

She Loves Me and the Color Purple. Nothing else comes close. Waitress is enjoyable but imo not in the same league.

If you are not close up orchestra, then go Mezz where you can't go wrong pretty much anywhere.

Studio 54 isn't very large. I haven't sat in the rear orchestra, but I'd guess it's still a fairly good seat. I agree about mezz seating though, if you can get front or mid mezz I'd probably pick that over rear orch, it has a very large overhang, so you'll be pretty close!

I'm personally excited about Tuck just based on the few things I've seen about it (I watched the periscope when they staged the opening number and absolutely loved the music), so if you think you might be interested it in, I'd say go for it! And it's directed by Casey Nicholaw after all.

I was Row N extreme right for this show and my view was great. I can't imagine Row P would be bad at all.

Long time lurker, first time poster here. Curious what you decide, justherehanging, as I'm facing a similar dilemma the end of May. My mom and I (mid 60's and mid 30's, respectively) are coming to town for a quick trip to see Hamilton (got tickets back in October). Our only other free night is a Monday, which limits our options. We're trying to decide between School of Rock and Something Rotten.

We're avid theater goers from LA, so the Something Rotten tour will probably come to town for the 2017-2018 season. So for that reason, should we make School of Rock a priority for this trip to see the SOR original cast? Or does anyone know if the original Something Rotten principals will extend through end of May? If not, that may sway our decision to wait for that tour, as Alex Brightman sounds fantastic in School of Rock.

Any options would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much.

BeachGirl2 I will be in New York from LA next week, and I got a ticket for Shuffle Along which is playing on a Monday night. I'm not sure if that interests you but thought I'd let you know since you have a free monday!

I think SoR already has announced that it will go on tour as well, or am I mistaken? If so, I'm sure it will come to LA as well.

I don't think the SR original cast will stay much longer. I'm blanking right now, but I already read something Christian Borle is gonna be doing, and Brian Darcy James might go do more TV work (or go back to Hamilton?). So if you wanna see them, see it now. Personally also liked SR way more than SoR. I found the music catchier, and it's just SO much fun. SoR was cute and the kids are very talented, but that was about it for me.

Aside from those two you were already thinking about I would recommend Daddy Long Legs Off-Broadway. Not sure if you would consider a very small, intimate show (2 actors, 3 musicians, 1 set) that is much more quiet that then 2 you were considering. But it's a beautiful piece of theater and by top recommendation for everyone right now.

Thanks so much, _IrisTinkerbell and PThespian. Really appreciate the insight! I hadn't considered Daddy Long Legs, so thanks for that tip. I think we're in the market for something a little more up beat, but man the clips sure sound beautiful! It's definitely the kind of show I'd love to see at some point.

Yeah, I think SoR did announce their intentions to tour, so I'm sure it will head our way eventually. So whatever we don't see in NY, I'll catch out here. It's just a matter of what we want to see first (and preferably with original cast, since that will be a treat for us who normally see the touring casts of shows!).

I read that Christian Borle is going to Falsettos. So maybe he'll want a break before he starts rehearsals and leave after April (our trip is end of May)? I've clearly spent way to much time over analyzing the Monday night show decision - ha!

Alessio2 - we would definitely consider Shuffle Along, expect it's not playing that particular Monday night at the end of May. I think they must switch schedules when they open. But thank you for the recommendation and hope you enjoy your trip and the show!

I doubt he's gonna leave that early though. Falsettos begins previews end of September, so rehearsal likely won't start before July-ish. Some people even stay in their show while already rehearsing the next one during the day. Not sure he'll stay that long but he should still be in it in May... you'd hope they'll announce his departure date with some notice.

I saw Fiddler on the Roof, She Loves Me, The King and I, Shuffle Along, Hamilton, The Color Purple and Daddy Long Legs on my last trip to NY a few weeks ago and you can't go wrong with any of them. All great shows in their own way.

I caught Something Rotten last year and that was super as well. Seeing as much of the original cast (rather than seeing it on tour) would be my suggestion as they all clicked so well and made for an amazing show. An American in Paris was also really good....saw it last year. As was Fun Home.

I would like to seen She Loves Me, but the seats selections are far back. I plan to see Curious again in late summer when I come back with my nephew... Something Rotten is AMAZING. I saw it though already. I hope to do something new:

Saturday 2pm: Tuck Everlasting ** Should I do Rush??? Or buy in advance, how has rush been going?

Saturday 8pm: American Pyscho ** Already bought

Tuck could get harder if the show is catching on with good reviews and good word of mouth, as of right now it's probably easy enough since everybody who could got the $20 tickets they offered for previews.

I don't know about SoR recently. It was terrible over the holidays, but that's special and doesn't really speak for how the lines are now.

Arriving today!!

I only bought two tickets in advance and I'm still just not 100% sure what else I want to see him just not sure why I'm just not clear on what to see and I appreciate all the advice everybody is given

i guess I will walk around and figure it out

still leaning toward tuck everlasting and rushing that on Saturday 2pm. Just hope seats aren't bad

then for Sunday leaning towards fiddler or school of rock
