Titanic just needed to resonate with the 12-year old girls who went to see it again and again. Which it did, and the rest is box office history.
Much like "Wicked," another musical with two good songs and a plot that makes no sense, had to resonate with every tween and formerly-tween female who encountered it. It did, and the rest is financial bonanza history.
Spiderman just needs to resonate in the same way with little boys and former little boys to sell all its tickets at regular price.
It could happen.

Hey- 7 y/o girls loved seeing it over and over again too! (I should know, I was one of them)
But other than just box office results, it WAS lauded at the Oscars. And I know the entire Oscar academy isn't made up of 2nd grade girls.
Though I guess I can see where the comparison is coming from when I compare it to Avatar instead. People mocked the heck outta that thing when the 1st trailer came out, and look how that happened. I thought Avatar was a pile o' dung, so if that's you what you think of Titanic, I get what you're saying.

I never said anything about trailers. I was talking about the bad buzz for Titanic and how everyone thought it was going to flop and it turned out to be a huge hit.
