lol. I will laugh so hard. If the news is announced and the new Elphie ISN'T Stephanie Block.
I will laugh too, but I'll also be semi-disappointed.
From Avenue Q to Wicked - I'm not seeing it
DancerGirl16, are you thinking of Stephanie D'Abruzzo?
yes, yes I am lol! I have totally been messing up names liek this today lol!
"I'm confused- Block isn't young? And she was definitely dark-haired the last time I checked. And I assume everyone takes on the same skin tone when they're slathered in green makeup"
"FOCI- hair color shouldn't be much of a factor in casting elphaba (or glinda for that matter) since the actresses wear wigs the whole show"
Yes, yes you're both right obviously I just wasn't getting what I was trying to say across very well....Stephanie just isn't Elphaba to me. Again, not that she couldn't do a beautiful job but I don't know she just isn't what I picture when I picture Elphaba. I'm sorry that's just how I feel. I could be completely off though b/c look wat a great job JLT is doing as Glinda, even though physically she doesn't much resemble the original petite actress.

I think a lot of people need to realize (not directed towards FOCI) that they're casting a replacement Elphaba, not a replacement Idina Menzel.
Mattio-I agree, thank you for not directing your comment towards me..but I am simply talking about how I personally envision the character of Elphaba-Idina Menzel or no.
"Could a black woman really play Elphaba? Would the make-up look right? I would love it if she did get the role, but I'm not sure that they would cast a black woman right off the bat."
Why not? Whether a woman is white, black, red, yellow, purple, blue with purple stripes, if they can paint her and make it work, and she's got the talent, why the heck not?
Hey, remember Elphaba isn't white or black, she's green.
greenifyed, Menzel left rent in July of 97, not 96...there's no way she left the show 2 months a a week after it opened. She was in that show for over a year as well.
Prior to Broadway, who played Elphaba: Idina or Stephanie?

when Schwatrz first composed the first few songs, Block sang through them with him. Idina has been the only one to play Elphaba.

Both. Block played her in the development phase and workshops, then Menzel got hired once the show started having ambibitions of going to Broadway and played in SF, since Block was completely unknown.

exactly Plum.
although Block DID have that one performance in SF when Idina was out... LOL>
has anyone yet mentioned that stephanie was the standby in the san fransico run, i couldnt see why producers would not want her as the role i bet she kicked but in her audition. But i could see both sho and stephanie in the role. AND STEPHANIE IS FROM THE BOY FROM OZ PEOPLE.
I really love Stephanie. She is such a gem onstage and offstage.
I bet she wouldn't slam the stage door in little girls' faces.

She doesn't look like one of those people, but everyone has those days.

I saw Stephanie as Elphaba in LA- and she was amazing! She originated and helped create the role thruought the workshop process. She and Steven Schwartz are friends still and it would really make sense for her to assume the role when Idina leaves. Idina was chosen to add star power to the Bway run, and Steph was taken with the show as the u/s so she'd get to make her Broadway debut. She then landed Boy from Oz before they began, so only did the SF run before moving to NYC for OZ. Now she's a bonafide "bway name" herself. I'm hopeful she'll take over as well. Idina is wonderful in the show, and she really worked hard on the role. Having known and seen her for many years I can attest to this being her greatest moment. I'm sure more good things are in store for her- perhaps opening the tour/London as well. Stephanie belts the heck out of Wicked's score. The "liza" voice she used in B from Oz isnt her full belt. She will rock the house if she takes over- and she deservedly should!

For those of you who are groveling at Idina's green little toes remember that you could have been just as easily kissing Stephanie's feet had the producers been brave enough to go with an unknown. I had heard that "Defying Gravity" was originally written for Stephanie and that she really owns it when she sings it.
ok everyone chill out with the rumors... i know for a fact that there are still rehersals going on for Elphaba. So for the next few weeks i guess... don't spread anymore... we'd all be happier people!
I saw BFO 28 times, Wicked once. Stephanie would make a great Elphaba, and would definitely bring me back to see Wicked again.

You really got a "young" look from Elphaba in the book? Considering she was 40 years old for the last quarter of it?

I have already placed my bet on Stephanie being Elphaba, by getting tickets to the show in late spring next year
