During the closing show, she almost stole the show from Hugh when she performed that number. The stage vibrated with her energy and the crowd gave her a well-earned standing ovation!

Stephanie was amazing in that show, and I think she captured that Liza Minnelli quality very well. She captured Liza's speaking voice really well, I thought. Actually, she was more Liza as Sally Bowles than Liza Liza (if that makes sense), but in any case, she was really great. Stole every scene she was in.

Popular---Yes, admittedly I never got to see this show. I only heard the OBCR. Something always "came up" that prevented me from getting my ass to the theatre to see it. Granted, it was on the other side of the country from me (and you too!), but that's no excuse. I make trips to New York frequently.
I'm not surprised, so much as IMPRESSED. That girl's got it, which was nothing new to me.
I wish the planets would align and the gods would smile down, and Stephanie would get to star in Funny Girl on Broadway. I know this is a repeated sentiment, but I can't think of anyone better suited for this part in our day and age, and I would be among the first in line to buy a crazy-priced ticket to see it.
For those of you reading along who haven't listened yet... do yourself a favor and click on the "Don't Rain on My Parade" audio clip posted on Stephanie's site. Electric... and magical. This would be a legendary star-cementing performance, if she got to play it on the Boards.

What I find amazing about the "Don't Rain on My Parade" clip is that it's live.... wow. She sounds awesome.
Based on the clips and everything I've heard, she's an amazing performer. I'll see her in the tour of Wicked in December, very excited!

Posted: 11/7/05 at 9:42pmShe really had that "Liza Essence" down without being a "Look/Sound" alike in that show, However Keating simply wore you out as she was often more Judy than Judy was - it was wild! I ADORE Hugh but I must say, I didn't FEEL Peter Allen at all from him, they look nothing alike and the vocals were great, but they weren't "Peter Allen". I kept trying to imagine Peter while watching Hugh but it just didn't work, TBFO was simply a Hugh Jackman vehicle, and a good one, but Peter Allen, no. (And I LOVED Peter Allen and yes I even enjoyed "Legs Diamond", Don't believe what you heard - It wasn't THAT bad!)

Although Stephanie was great in The Boy from Oz, I never for one second thought that she sounded like Liza. If anything she sounded like Ruthie Henshall doing a bad Liza impression (wasn't Ruthie origianally up for Liza... and then got preggers). Anyways, her "Don't Rain on My Parade" is fierce.

Well, to be fair, Stephanie had an impossible task. If she would've done a Liza impersonation, she would've had to have done Liza spanning quite a few years -- and no one would have gotten it. Plus, people would say, "Aw, she's just an impersonator."
Instead, she chose to hit a few ism's of Liza, and bring herself into the part. She chose as well as anyone could have done...and she is fierce.
She DOES do the British thing every once in a while -- I think it is a habit that classical vocal and acting training gives many people. Nasty habit!

Ruthie did do the workshops for TBFO in NYC...neither she nor Stephanie Block really were much like Liza...although Ruthie was further off than Stephanie. But then, as mentioned by a poster above, Hugh Jackman wasn't the LEAST bit like Peter Allen...and nobody seemed to care. A star-turn will always triumph over all.
On the other hand--- from workshop on, Keating's Judy was simply amazing!

It isn't so much a "British thing" as an over-enunciation of certain consonants... particularly "d"s. Stephanie is a classically trained singer (as am I), and as terrific as that is for stamina and technique... it can also get in your way and trip you up, once in a while. In the pop genre, it can be really awkward.
It's like a hip-hop dancer occasionally extending their leg and pointing their toe, or with a little too much turn-out, revealing years of ballet training. Doesn't quite work for "street dancing."
Same thing here with Steph. She may not even be aware of it, but in her quest for excellent diction, she's crossed a few lines into clipped sounds... particularly the word "nobody" in both "Defying Gravity" and "Parade" from Funny Girl. It's comes out "Nobotty" with an overly-proper "O" sound as well. Too schooled, yes... but also easily fixable if brought to her attention. Not like she needs to rethink her whole singing technique, style, or anything. I mean, look where it's gotten her so far.
