Stephen Lynch On Gay Marriage And His Tony Award Nomination.

Stephen Lynch, The Wedding Singer: What’s it like getting nominated for your Broadway debut playing Robbie Hart, alongside all these great guys? "It’s crazy. These are hypertalented people. It’s making me nervous. I’m proud of myself and my performance, but this is kind of a shocker. I really appreciate all the Tony nominations that our show got."

Your leading lady, Laura Benanti, has been a two-time Tony nominee, so what’s it like sharing that long, steamy kiss with her in Act I? "That kiss used to be two seconds long. One day we realized that the longer it went, the more the audience would feel we were falling in love at that instant. It also makes the scene kinda funny when we’re mashing it up for a minute and a half."

What’s your favorite moment in the show? "It changes all the time. One week, it was 'Come Out of the Dumpster' because I was so tired and got to lie in the dumpster and just listen to Laura sing. Another week, it was 'Casualty of Love' because I got to exorcise my demons onstage." One of the show’s unsung heroes is Matthew Saldivar, who plays your pal, Sammy. "Matt’s my man. He’s been there since day one of the readings. He’s an incredibly gifted actor and so instinctively funny."

Speaking of weddings, some politicians want to pass a constitutional amendment against gay marriage. What do you think? "That’s ridiculous! Two people who love each other should be able to celebrate it in any way they see fit."

Love Stephen. Was wondering how he felt about the whole gay...stuff...seeing how one of his songs, "If I Were Gay" appeals to many homophobic people. I guess it always appeals to homosexuals..seeing how I found it funny a long time ago as well.

He seems very geniune. When he came out of the stage door he seemed shocked to se so many people waiting for him. Great guy.

Really, Moxie? I know I'm a little biased and all, but I think it's one of the most romantic moments on a B'Way stage right now.

And Stephen is INCREDIBLY genuine and kind. One of the nicest people I've ever met. I know that on Saturday and Wednesdays sometimes he plays "poker with the boys" (haha) but he always comes out and signs after the performance anyway and goes back in. Not many performers do that. He's so incredibly giving to his fans. I'm so happy for his success, he deserves it.

He's so excited to be on Broadway and you can see it in his eyes outside after the show. and his performances are always amazing.

Am I missing something? What does stephen lynch have to do with gay marriage? Why would the interviewer bring up the topic in the first place? Cause it's a show about weddings? RANDOM.

Not sure how the subject was brought up either, but at the end of Stephen Lynch's DVD, it says during the credits:

"Congratulations are in order for my dear friend Kirker Butler, whose marriage to long time companion Lance Barber was finally legally recognized by the state of California. I wish you two all the joy and happiness you deserve. Sabo..."

Stephen is indeed a class act. He's such a cool and genuine guy. And The Wedding Singer is great.

Fosterchild, Stephen Lynch plays a 'Wedding Singer'; the topic of gay marriage is in the news. There's nothing 'random' about that query. Anything 'wedding-related' is fair game. Previously, I asked Stephen about his own wedding and how he proposed. ... Now, if I were interviewing someone playing, say, Sweeney Todd or Frankie Valli, I could see how a question about gay marriage comes out of left field. But that's not the case.

Stephen is absolutely hllarious. I've been a fan of his for so long, and got so much more excited for Wedding Singer because he was attached to it. IMO, they couldn't have picked someone better. He's amazing.

Agreed.

Although, if you try to sing anything Adam Sandler writes you will sound like Adam Sandler. It's natural. And Lynch does have a Sandler tone even to his own stuff.

But, yeah. He sounds a lot like Sandler on the recording. But we all know who has the better voice.
