re: Story of My Life -- Official Broadway CD?

I hope you do enjoy it. I probably didn't appreciate SITPWG as much as I should have, especially since I am a big fan of Seurat and his artwork. The concept was surely creative, and executed well in the most recent Roundabout Theatre revival, but the songs just did not reel me in. Maybe a second viewing will convert me. But I guess to better calibrate my taste with yours, other shows I liked include: The 39 Steps, August: Osage County, [title of show], Gypsy, Curtains, Avenue Q and In The Heights. Shows I did not like include: Spamalot, A Tale of Two Cities, Mary Poppins, Chicago, Hedda Gabler and Altar Boyz.

How are "Rent" and "Spring Awakening" smaller shows? They each had a bigger cast, a more theatrical production and considerable hype to accompany them (much of which was well-deserved). "The Story of My Life" is also a new original musical (more reminiscent of "[title of show]"'s Broadway stint) with a bare set and two performers. I don't believe there was much hype about this show, although I wouldn't be surprised if word-of-mouth spread quickly.

I'll see the show next week,,,and if I love it I will quickly get another ticket and hope for a CD Cast Recording, because I'm not sure how much of a life this show has on Broadway....these are strange times....

re: Story of My Life -- Official Broadway CD?

I think proof that there might very well be an Original Broadway Cast recording of THE STORY OF MY LIFE became evident a few minutes ago. I just went to their website for the show, thestoryofmylife.com and found, for the first time, a fully and beautifully orchestrated two songs from this show, Will Chase is singing the beautiful song, The Butterfly and Malcolm Gets is singing Mrs Remington. Neil Bartram's music and lyrics sound great and Jonathan Tunick's orchestrations are first rate as well. The only song that I heard prior to these two was a piano only orchestrated duet of Will and Malcolm doing Angels In The Snow on that Fox News Show. Maybe this is the proof we all needed that this lovely score has already been recorded. I hope so.

Don't quote me on this, but I seem to remember reading somewhere that a few (two?) songs were recorded around the time of the Goodspeed tryout. Either before or after it, I'm not sure. I wish I had a link to this article, but I honestly can't recall where I read it.

Edited to add: I was wrong about the timeframe. Writers Bartram & Hill mentioned a brief recording session on their blog on January 28 (http://www.bartramandhill.com/new.htm)

Did the Goodspeed production use an orchestra like the one being used at The Booth Theatre or was it just a piano, like on the Fox News clip heard recently? I just wish they could get some clips of a fully orchestrated scene from the show on some morning network shows like The View, because Shrek looked and sounded just great on The View this morning. I would like to hear and see: The Butterfly and Angels In The Snow, fully orchestrated and performed by Will Chase and Malcolm Gets in the same format as used on The View.

This show, more than likely, won't have a very long regional life.

Really? More than likely, Story of My Life will do better in regional theatre than it will on Broadway.

Thanks for posting the news that songs have been added to the web site. . . .

But is it me, or does this version of "The Butterfly" feel different than it does on Broadway. I remember it being . . . idk . . . slower? Less "forced?"

Either way, I'm thrilled to have access to it and the other songs. Still looking forward to paying good money for the real thing!!!

The "Mrs. Remington" audio may be Broadway, it was definitely recorded recently. In the Goodspeed run and even early in the Broadway previews, Will did not say the "Donnie Carter" line.

In "Butterfly" i'm about 90% sure that Malcolm says "oh keep reading", and in the audio he says "keep going".
"Sometimes on the strip, the dreams you come in with, ain't the dreams you leave with" ~Rock of Ages
"I'm a butterfly, trivial and small, and in the greater scheme of things, I don't mean much at all." ~The Story of My Life
"Forget Regret, or life is yours to miss." ~Rent

re: Story of My Life -- Official Broadway CD?

i wrote to the writers of the show about the songs and a cast recording and this is what they replied to me with...

"Thanks for writing -- I'm so glad you liked the show. Those songs on the website were done independently as "teasers" to get people interested in seeing the show .... we certainly plan on doing a full cast album eventually (hopefully sooner rather than later) and when we do, we would re-record these songs to represent exactly how they appear in the show.
All the best,
Neil"

he sounds pretty positive about doing a cast recording, i really hope there is one! the music for this show was amazing. going back this weekend to see it again.

I think they changed it between the first and second preview. He did say it at the second preview.

And judging from the writers' blog (not "block", haha!), these songs were recorded about a week before previews. See link in my previous post.
