I find it strange that this sorry thread even exists for a project that has never at any time, been green lit.  Anyone who knows anyone in the business has known this from day one.  And people keep bumping it and then trying to act like she's STILL on it, STILL going to "do it."  I mean, really.  And all that brouhaha about the other person picking up the rights - do let me know how that's going - it's been a year now with not a peep.  But apparently this non-event still has people believing it will happen.  It will happen when I play Mama Rose.

Hell, you might be more believable in the role than Streisand, who must be 76 by now, and looks every bit of it.  This needed to be made 30 years ago — she would have been great if she didn’t direct it — and I’ll bet she still would have been older than the real Mama Rose was in the early scenes.

Weren't there rumors of her doingMamein the 80's or 90's? That could have been great.

There's some good things in the 1962 film of GYPSY. Number one: Natalie Wood of course....she was born to play that role.

Number two: Faith Dane recreating her "Mazeppa" from the original show.

Number three: Little Ann Jillian strutting her stuff as Dainty June....one of the best Dainty June's I have ever seen.

That corny narration didn't work...Russell as Rose was ok but everyone wanted Merman.

They also needed another director. George Cukor could have done a nice job with it.

You know who should have been cast as Rose back then? Judy Garland. That would have been amazing. It might have been a performance to top A Star is Born.

They weren't wrong to reject Merman; Merman's art could not be captured effectively on film.

Other than Roz and that, indeed awful, narration, it's a pretty good movie, but I'm baffled by all the praise for Wood (whom I'll praise for West Side Story). I think she's pretty dreadful, and at the end when she screams "Look Mama, I'm pretty!" And flails her arms like windmills, she comes across as a malfunctioning robot from The Stepford Wives.
