I think this is just so much posturing and it will never get made. As the President says, "Aw, come on." If you look at the cost of the new Rocky Horror or Repo, if she really wants to make it, this is the end of her life, she's worth 300-400 mil, you reach in, take 30-40 mil (which you can make this film for), and you make it. It's a vanity project anyway. If she's too cheap to reach into her own pocket, good luck to her, but this will be in limbo forever and is never gonna happen.
That's what I don't understand, either. It's not like she's 25 years old and is saving for the future. She's worth (I think) around 400 million dollars. If she wanted to make this movie, she could make this movie.

Hopefully she will move on now. Enough is enough.
Enough is enough (is enough)
She can't go on, she can't go on no more now!
I'd always dreamed I'd play the perfect Mama!
But it turned out to be like every other failed venture I've had!
I'm surprised she's not worth more than $400 million, but I was thinking the same thing earlier today! Why doesn't she just pay for it herself? What else does she have to do with her hundreds of millions of dollars!
"Contentment, it seems, simply happens. It appears accompanied by no bravos and no tears."
If she wanted to put 10 percent or so of her net worth at risk I think it would be a little to late for GYPSY. Plus the original was pretty good with Roslyn Russel, Karl Maldin and Natalie. Probably couldn't be improved on, let alone equaled. But a movie musical that COULD be improved on and by a whopping large margin was MAME! If she played that she might actually make a profit on her investment - money and artistic-wise.
uh...what movie were you watching? the original Gypsy is a terrible film, the only good thing about it (imo) is Natalie Wood. If only they had scrapped the rest, kept her, and tried again.
Weren't there rumors of her doing Mame in the 80's or 90's? That could have been great.

There's some good things in the 1962 film of GYPSY. Number one: Natalie Wood of course....she was born to play that role.
Number two: Faith Dane recreating her "Mazeppa" from the original show.
Number three: Little Ann Jillian strutting her stuff as Dainty June....one of the best Dainty June's I have ever seen.
That corny narration didn't work...Russell as Rose was ok but everyone wanted Merman.
They also needed another director. George Cukor could have done a nice job with it.
Roz Russell could have been perfect in a non-musical adaptation of the story, or if the score had originally been written to suit her type of singing voice (I absolutely adore her in Wonderful Town). The problem with movies versions of musicals where there's supposed to be...great singing, I guess, is that movie studios want big stars who frequently aren't great singers. It worked back in the day with dubbing movie stars (even when it didn't seem very natural) but they don't do that these days so we end up with people like Pierce Brosnan and Russell Crowe stinking up movie musicals.
Oh I forgot about Faith Dane! you're right, she's great in the movie.

Thanks for a great laugh! Hey all you haters of the 1962 film: don't you even like Paul Wallace? I think it's great that he got to recreate Tulsa on film.

Huh? You are aware that Natalie Wood died in 1981.

I believe BF is referring to Streisand - who was on board to star in "Mame" on ABCTV back in 2002. She then wanted to direct it, but not star. She chose Cher to star, and then Herman cancelled the whole thing as he intended to bring it to Broadway.
As for GYPSY, Laurent said Streisand approached him in late '92, ready to do GYPSY, opposite Madonna. But the television project with Midler was already a 'done deal', and he passed on Streisand's idea. (This was said in an interview right before the Midler TV movie aired).
Streisand would have been 50, with Madonna being 34. Not too way off.
This Streisand site has an amazingly complete timeline of her involvement with a Gypsy movie beginning in 1989. It's kind of a shame it never came to fruition.
Barbra showed costume test photos of her as Mama Rose in her most recent concert at Hyde Park on Sunday. I’d be willing to bet they’ll also be shown in her MSG concert in August. I think she looks stunning...anyone think she’s still trying to get this made or is she just teasing. You can see them in this video at around the 34 and a half minute mark. They go by fast but like I said I think they look great!
I think the project is dead. She’s also had so much work done since it was first announced that m it would only be believable now if she had kittens, not a human daughter.
Any Sherman Paladino has the rights. This is in her hands now. I suspect it will go the same way as Babs’ NORMAL HEART. For whatever the reason (perhaps Babs’ ego/personality, perhaps a bit of sexism) Barbra Streisand is incapable of getting a film made in Hollywood. And that isn’t going to get better as she approaches 80.
I think it’s safe to assume she’ll continue making films in a supporting capacity. 2012’s THE GUILT TRIP was sheer perfection for her in a shared leading role. I’m sure she’s aware of her career limitations she now has this late in her life. If anything, I love her nostalgic narrations she provides every time she shows old photos and montages of her life and career. The long one she did the other night at Hyde Park was fabulous. She could have just done that without performing.
I find it very strange that she would include that photo montage of GYPSY in her concert unless she was still fighting for the project to get made. Especially given the lyrics she sang immediately before displaying it.
“I knew who I was this morning, but I've changed a few times since then.”
