I agree with Josh. What if someone started saying that your performance in blank show sucked so bad. I mean it's not very fair to the actors or the shows to be bashing them all the time. Their is a differnece between stating your opinion and being obnoxious. If you don't like something state it and move on don't rampage about it on every board that it comes up on.
Ok so although Josh Stricklands comments are not all correct in terms of "theater fans" He does have a point that certain people trash and bash like its nobody's business.

It wouldn't be the first time. Frankly, I think we're a walk in the park compared to the tongue lashing that Brantley and other reviewers across the country frequently give out. Criticism goes with the territory, and if it's something that shakes you or offends you as a performer then you just DON'T READ IT.
"I agree with Josh. What if someone started saying that your performance in blank show sucked so bad."
...then they think it sucked so bad. I don't understand the problem with that.
Assumptions on why they missed a show, why they didn't come out the stage door, what a producer was thinking, etc. are abundant on these boards. If you're going to post something publically in regards to their personal character that may hurt their reputation think twice about how much of the story you are basing your opinion on. Getting personally attacked by people who don't know me or a situation would bother me too.
Say all you want about a show (if you have some tact, all the better) but I think it's the personal attacks by people who don't know anything about a situation is what he's mostly commenting about.
People have opinions. Others need to get over it.
If I'm a huge fan of Band X, and they come out with a song that I hate, I'm allowed not to like it. Same thing with shows.
Broadway is great, actors are great - some shows and some actors are people's favorites, and others are not.
It can't be all rainbows and flowers in the land of Broadway all the time. That would be boring.
I'm reminded of the History of the World Part 1 quote
"And of course, with the birth of the artist came the inevitable afterbirth - the critic"

If you read the article you would see that is said boards across the internet so stop trying to be all defensive because you think he's pin pointing you.

Don't even call Brantly a reviewer. He liked Melanie Griffith in Chicago!
I'm sorry he sees what we say about his show but, it isn't very good. His show is PURE entertainment. Plenty of us on here a looking for a more fulfilling theater experience. His show is not that. He shouldn't care what others are saying about Tarzan because his show is still doing well.

Yup...and BWW and ATC are what actors are "weary of." I am fairly certain he is including this one.
Wickedfreak2, as far as I know, BWW and All That Chat are the two biggest Broadway boards, and have many complaining people.
What other boards is he talking about, then?

You guys say bad thingd about him all the time and he comes back with some bad things to say at you. He's giving you a taste of your own medicine.
Also Josh is a really nice guy. I've met him before and he's super sweet. If you read the whole Q and A you wouldn't car so much about that one comment. I love Josh Strickland and will contineue to love him.

I'm sure he's fine with the people that are actually expressing opinions about shows and performers, but when it turns into personal attacks and when there is a complete lack of respect and decency, that's when it gets out of hand.
Of course, no matter how much anyone explains this, there will still be those who refuse to understand the difference between making an intelligent comment and being an ass.

We never said he wasn't nice. And I really haven't seen anyone say that he was even bad in the show. Many people have said the show is bad but not him.
If people are not liking his show or performance its their opinion and they have a right to say what they please. It's when people start disregarding performers as people it becomes out of hand.
I agree...I agree that people should just give it up: Tarzan is not going anywhere! Quit bashing it and deal with it, seriously, it's not gonna hurt you, just don't see it or pay attention to it.
I don't disagree that people's sensless personal attacks are unneccesary. Regardless of whether or not this is what Mr. Strickland is referring to (it probably is), his statement does not make that clear. He outrightly says we should be positive about what everyone is doing. That's just a ridiculous sentiment.

I can see how it is harmful to have threads about how bad an actor is, when they have worked tremendously hard on their part, etc. ("I hate so and so..") But constructive criticism is another story. It is judging solely on their performance, and what their faults were. Nothing wrong with that.
Sorry Josh, but you need to learn to accept some negative reviews. A person has the right to judge a show, and their experience with it. If a person looks into what people are saying about a show they can determine if the particular show is their taste and to their liking. That is what message boards are for.

We're not being hateful, Josh, just honest. You're starring in a friggin' theme park show.

"You're starring in a friggin' theme park show."
True.
ya know, i dont think its all that rare for bway actor to read the message boards for a while and get tired of what they see. And ive met a few who say they only come to search their own name/show while others read anything but. It takes a certain kind of person to deal with all the arguing- when I try to talk about the message boards or relay a convo Im having to people who dont partake Im often met with a 'why do you waste your time on such petyness' type of answer.
I dont know that Id read a board where Im talked about either- good or bad- itd be awkward to me. Some actors dont read reviews either.
I think the purpose of his statement was towards the rude/offensive comments on this board...not so much the "I don't like this show" comments. I agree with him, some people on this board are incredibly offensive which is unecessary.

I think he is right that people wanting to see shows come here and see hateful things and that we should try to stay positive so to inspire others to see theatre. However I think he misunderstands many peoples reasons for saying negative things. They love theatre and just want it to be better....they are expressing complaints with the assumed message behind it that they love theatre and want it to grow. At least that is why I hope people say negative things about shows.
For every person who may hate the show, there is someone that loves it just as much.
