I agree that many posters on the boards are catty when they dislike a show. Some post about their hate of Wicked, Rent, etc. whenever they can. You can dislike a show all you want and that is FINE because it is your opinion. However, if you dislike a show, you should be able to back up your negative opinions. Saying "Wicked is a spectacle" is not enough. What about Wicked is a spectacle? Why do you think "Idina sux?" etc. Back up what you say, otherwise you just look stupid.
I also found it hilarious while reading this thread that a poster who I have found to be nothing but catty and disrespectful says that they agree with Strickland. Come on! Is your nose just a bit brown?
I am disappointed in Josh's blanket statement about everyone on the boards being "very hateful" and all the negative comments about posters.
There are some of us who enjoy Tarzan, and have been extremely supportive of the show and everyone involved with it since the very beginning. I have seen the show several times, and have always said positive things about it on here and by word of mouth to others. I recall many late nights when Tarzan began it's run on Broadway, and my getting into arguments with people on BWW about the show because I was defending it.
So Josh, please don't consider everyone a hater and a mean hearted, negative, petty poster who makes up lies. You may end up losing those people who do support you.

Liotte, thats ridiculous. The boy shouldnt have to single out his fans or those with generally sunny dispositions just to ensure loyalty. Obviously not every single person is negative on every single subject. Generalizations were invented precisely for questions like that one, dont be so touchy, im sure his last intention was to create more negativity himself.

When I first saw Tarzan I hadn't read any of the reviews and frankly I'm glad I didn't. I went there with an open mind, without any influence from anyone. I went with my roommate and another friend from school and we all loved it. People have no right trying to bring other people down. It's okay to have your opinion about the show, but being childish and talking about his physical appearance compared to other "Tarzans" in the past is ridiculous. I think that if a person has something bad to say about the show they should have something of substance to back up their opinion. If you don't understand where he is coming from when he says that, "We're all working for the same team here, and it's the team of just trying to make it. Let's all be positive for each other," its sad. What's wrong with being supportive of people in shows?

What so were supposed to say that we love every show on broadway and that every performer is amazingly talented?

I don't love Tarzan but it's just ok. It's no work of art IMHO. And there are some very very untalented actors...*cough*Tony Danza*cough*. But it doesn't mean we're being hateful because we think a show or performer is horrible.
Mr. Strickland, if I have ever said anything on this board to offend you (and I probably have) I formally apologize.
And leave you with this thought, as one member of this community pointedly (and correctly) admonished me: you don't have to read the posts if they bother you.
I just reread the Q&A, and I'm sure much of what was said was taken out of context. Josh does have a very valid point though. He has no problem with people giving their opinions of the show, whether good or bad. Places like BWW are a great resource to hear what real people think about Broadway.
It's the personal attacks (especially when you don't know the actor personally), and the lies that people tell about actors, producers, things about the production that they know nothing about, etc. that make forums such as this such a negative place. This isn't just about Josh and Tarzan, it has happened to many shows and many people. Josh is advocating being supportive of the Broadway community. If you have an opinion on the show, fine, feel free to share it. Not every show is right for every single person, and it's great there are so many different shows to appeal to everyone. Just stop the personal attacks on people, and try to be positive for the future of Broadway.

Mr. Strickland...
We all have opinions. Deal with it.
But you can sing good.

Ya know, I will admit that I DO seek out other's opinions on shows before seeing them. When I'm paying $100+ to see a show, I want to make sure that I am going to have a good time. So I do my research. But I always try to get both sides of the story...
And I have to agree with other people....everyone is entitled to their opinions...if you don't like their opinion...so be it. But it IS theirs to express...

Ahh but I love Josh Strickland.
Just not the show he's in.

I agree that we all have a right to express how we feel about a show that we spent a good amount of money on seeing, as long as we back our opinion with facts and reasoning.
But I also feel that some people on this board are missing the point Josh was trying to make. He was mainly criticizing the people who make up lies and assume things that they do not know are true for their own personal enjoyment, not the people who honestly and politely give their opinion, whether it be negative or positive. Remember, he said earlier in the Q&A that he got over the harsh reviews very quickly, so he simply cannot be pinpointed as a person who can't handle criticism, because from what I gathered from the entirety of the interview, he is doing just fine with it.
It can't be denied that message boards, including this one, generally have a negative tone to them. People enjoy arguing with each other, and that's not a bad thing, but at times it can get very out of hand.
I have to respectfully disagree with Mr. Strickland on this one. I hated Tarzan. End of story. I thought it was awful. I'd hate to see someone waste hard earned cash on it and feel the need to express my opinion on it.

I disagree with Josh. If we were all positive about everything, we wouldn't have anything to discuss - we would all sound like robots. The truth is that we have our opinions and this message board is here for people to express their opinions, not pat every single performer on the back.
And just for the record, I think that Tarzan was one of the most boring shows I have been to.
If we were all positive about everything, we would all sound like Broadway.com...
Well, we would sound like Broadway.com minus John Simon, but he doesn't even seem to be writing new stuff for them
There are a ton more 'offical insert name of show/actor here Love' threads than there are hate threads.
Josh,
A man walks into the doctor's office and says 'my arm hurts when i go like this.' the doctor says, 'don't go like that.'
you don't like? don't read. simple as that. or prove your talent wothy of our praise. up till now, you've done neither.
