I know you guys find these posts irritating, but I'm seriously at a loss here.
I went to a season audition for a local theatre (they do six shows over the course of the summer) and I've been called back for the role of Little Red in Into the Woods. They've asked for a Sondheim song that is sung by a character similar to the one I'm auditioning for.
I initially auditioned with the first sixteen bars of "Glamorous Life" from A Little Night Music- because I knew that Little Red would be the only role I would be up for and it was age appropriate. But I can't sing that again, and it's all I can think of.
Just some general info: I'm sixteen; my range spans the G two octaves below middle C to the A below High C.
Anyone have any ideas?
Hmmm...maybe "Not A Day Goes By," "We Do Not Belong Together," or "Every Day A Little Death."
Just some ideas:
Unworthy of Your Love (Squeaky's part)
Sunday in the Park With George
Like it Was
Not a Day Goes By
Our Time (could be sung by anyone; not gender specific)
Green Finch and Linnet Bird
The Miller's Son
Anyone Can Whistle

do they want a whole song? you could sing a cut from unworthy of your love from assassins. there won't be trumpets from anyone can whistle would also work i guess.
Slaton, I don't think ANY of those are really appropriate for Little REd....AT ALL....
But "EVery Day a Little Death" is PERFECT.
Unfortunately, Sondheim doesn't usually write for female teenage characters, so choices are limited. I was going for selections that are sung by young, female, optimistic and somewhat naive characters. Most of the songs I chose exhibit those qualities or could if sung a certain way. I'm not quite sure I see how Every Day a Little Death would be appropriate.

There is no reason why you cannot sing the song again for a callback especially since it honors their request for a Sondheim song and is suitable for the character. However, if you insist on doing something different, how about a cutting of IF MOMMA WAS MARRIED from GYPSY, which is age-appropriate, "wish"-ful and similar in its forthrightness to some of Little Red's material?
I agree with What More Do I Need - thats very up, very light and fun to sing, and shouldn't be too difficult for a pianist to play.
Thanks everyone, lots of things for me to look into.. Luckily I have two weeks to figure it out. I SO needed some outside input, I got a little to nervous/excited and I just couldn't think of anything. Little Red's one of my dream roles. I'm probably going to go with What More Do I Need or If Momma was Married, since I'm pretty familiar with both of them.
Oh, and MusicMan, I'm not "insisting" on doing anything- they asked for something different and then gave me the criteria.
