I am not sure which board is best for this question, forgive me if I am in the wrong spot.
My daughter, a junior at LACHSA (Los Angeles County High School of Arts) would like to spend a portion of the summer in NY in a Musical Theatre intensive. She is thinking about NYU, PACE, Michigan (obviously not in NYC), CAP21, etc. The problem is cost and quality of program.
I wonder, for those who have attended conservatory or university intensives, which has the best reputation in Musical Theatre, perhaps also including audition prep for college audition process. We are very tight financially, this will be difficult to do. I wonder if any of the programs offer scholarships. I looked at CAP 21, cost wise and couldn't believe that it could come close to $5000 with housing (not including food, etc). That is really out of reality for us. Any insight would be great, I know how important summer intensives are for the summer prior to applying to college, just trying to work out which are the great programs and which offer financial assistance when needed. Thanks so much!

I did a few different theatre intensives throughout high school and college and can tell you unequivocally that Cap21 is worth the money. I believe they do offer scholarships for their summer programs (I know they do for their other programs, so I think it's the same with the pre-college). I did their summer professional program and it absolutely changed my perspective on the industry. I loved it so much that I decided to do their two year program as well, and it's the best decision I ever made for my career.

Thanks so much for the great info. Are you from NY or did you travel to NY? I ask because one of the things I am really concerned with is housing. She is only 16 and unless we can convince a friend to go along, she'll be alone. I would like her to stay with other kids in the program but it looks like (from the CAP 21 website) that they are really on their own as opposed to a dorm situation with supervision on a university campus.

I had to travel to NY, and the one downside was that Cap doesn't offer housing, but there are other universities (including NYU) that have dorm housing that's open to outside students, so that's what I did. I happened to live in one of the residence halls for SVA (the school for visual arts). I know there were people in my summer program who were placed together in NYU housing, though. If you have any other questions about the program feel free to send me a message!

Thanks so much, the info in the post is great!
Here is the link for the general musical theater section. Lots of good information! Each school has its own forum. And if you post a question, people tend to be very helpful.
Keep in mind that some of the programs are so expensive because college credit is given. For example, NYU's gives six. That's a lot for a summer program.

While I'm not telling you that great programs can make a great difference: they are by in no means necessary. PLENTY of talented kids get into great programs without them. Plenty of talented kids graduate from GOOD programs and have great careers without them. Also: GADS of kids that participate in them DON'T get into top tier progams or go anywhere professionally.

Hi Debra,
This is an amazing opportunity for any student that is planning to study musical theatre in college or looking to expand their audition techniques. "Learn how to prepare a successful audition at Goodspeed Musicals' special one-day workshop with Prof. Brent Wagner, chair of the University of Michigan's Musical Theatre Dept., on October 25." More info: http://www.goodspeed.org/audition-master-class
It's in Florida, not NYC, but Broadway Theater Project has a great 3 week intensive.

Edit because I didn't realize this was such an old thread bumped up....
