George is Michael Cerveris dream role? you think he will be cast?
Where are you getting the info that there is definitely a transfer and that it will be at Studio 54? Also, Michael has played the role before, ie Ravinia, but I would love to see him do it on broadway.
I like Michael Cerveris as a performer, but his George does nothing for me. I would really like to see the London leads transfer, if that's possible.
(shake head) Mmmmm... Raul is MUCH BETTER... I don't want another bald George after Daniel Evans...
It looks like a transfer is likely to Broadway for next fall:

As much as I like Raúl (um, obviously), I definitely don't think he's a fit for the production that's transferring.
Brian D'arcy James...

Why not? Because they use computer graphics? He's the best George I have ever seen/heard. Mandy's voice sucks (though perfect interpretation of the character) and Michael just didn't impress me. If only Daniel Evans comes to Broadway or Dan Futterman could sing (yes, I'm a Dan Freak as I've said), Raul is the best choice at this very moment.
It's a little hard to explain... based on the cast recording at least, the London production was a little more naturalistic and conversational...warmer, maybe. And Raul's George isn't like that. I don't doubt that he could do it, since he's an extraordinary actor, but I don't think he's necessarily the best fit.
Steven Pasquale is my first choice, but either Jason Danielly or Norm Lewis would be great.
Norm Lewis is black! I'm not racist but this role DEFINITELY can't play by a black guy...
Neil Patrick Harris needs to play George.
i think cerveris should play the role... he's so talented and i'd love to see him in a role that involves creation as opposed to destruction...

I think he would be fantastic, he has so many different ranges of characters, it's mind boggling
Because George Seurat was a real person and he was not black.
it would be like nathan lane playing malcolm X
I was lucky enough to see this Sunday in London over the summer. As much as this tranfer news THRILLS me, I can't help but feel Studio 54 would be a poor house to hold such an intimate adaptation. The set, an all-white studio/home, made the house feel smaller. I wonder if 54's mammoth size would hinder the production. I can see this show thriving somewhere like the Music Box or the Booth (like the original). Then again, Doyle's Sweeney revival began in a 3/4 thrust and it worked just fine at the O'Neill. Either way, I'm stoked to hear Sunday may transfer.
It would be much better suited for the American Airlines. It's going to be Roundabout, I presume?
I personally don't think that Raul would fit into this production. George in this production is more warm and down to earth and I think if they're actually opening the production on Broadway, it would be nice to see some new faces aka use someone unknown.
'I'm not racist but this role DEFINITELY can't play by a black guy...'
Wait.
This isn't a documentary account of someone's life. It's a modernist musical that uses a fictionalized version of a person to explore the concept an artist's relationship to his art. This show has absolutely nothing to do with George Seraut, the actual human being. Because he's the only person that isn't represented in the painting, he's really the best character to get away with casting 'non-traditionally.'
ETA: Do we really consider Raul Esparza 'white'?
so, in other words, I could write a "fictionalized" play of Martin Luther King Jr. creating his "I have a dream" speech, but since it is a fictionalized version of a character, Michael Cerveris could play Dr. King.
Actually...sure. You can write whatever you want. And if you get it produced, great.
And if you are willing to back up the implications such a choice would impose on such a piece, then have at it.

"This show has absolutely nothing to do with George Seraut"
Erm... that charater IS Gearge Seurat. Sondheim wrote this musical under his name. I can't say everything in the musical is the real life of George Seurat (of course Dot is fictionalized), but you can't admitt that particular character is NOT George Seurat, the real person. He even use the account of the painting "Sunday in the Island of La Grande Jatte". If that character is not George Seurat, the whole musical is a fallacy!
Btw, at least Raul is a Caucasian, but u can't find a black guy to play a white historical person.
