Didn't Streisand say she wanted to direct if she was to be in it? There have been weird rumors floating around about this for so long I'm forgetting what's substantiated and what's not.
I'm sorry. That wasn't very nice. I should have not make a crack about her nose. It was uncalled for. Updated On: 2/16/05 at 04:03 PM
I just thought of someone who would be great, although would never be cast - Tovah. She could sing and act the hell out of Norma. Moot point, I know.
Never thought of Tovah, but she would be wonderful. I'm picturing her right now.
Yes, we all know Patti would never do it. I was just dreaming out loud...Ah, my beloved, Patti.
Does anyone know the reason why Patti was dropped from the original show when it transfered to NY? I never understood it. Updated On: 2/16/05 at 04:08 PM
The producers didn't think she was a bankable enough name. And they wanted Glenn Close anyway.
For years and years we were not getting ANY movie musicals at all !!! Now that things are starting to heat up, we are all complaining about the cast ! The movie hasn't even been announced yet, please ! I am sure we will have plenty of duscussions once it's official ! ALW, the producers and the studio will cast whomever they think fit for the role, no matter what we say ! And for the record I do believe that Glenn will be better in Sunset, than say Gerard Butler was in Phantom ! I do think Elaine Paige would be phenomenal but there is no way they'll cast her !
Take care
I saw Glenn, Betty, Elaine (and understudies Karen Mason and Maureen Moore) in Sunset - and they all brought something different to the role. For me, Elaine was the best...too bad she is not much of a name.
Glenn cannot sing as well as Betty and Elaine, but I did love her campy, over the top performance.
Rath - any Betty stories to share?
Plenty, Jim. But this ain't the place!
"Don't you KNOW who I AM???"
LOL!!!
I think I'll change my quote to something SUNSET related.
I will share one then.
"Sunset" still ranks as one of my favorites. I saw Glenn towards the end of her run (wanting good seats on a Saturday night, got them well in advance - was living in Boston at the time - had to wait until the spring in case of snowstorms). I got a poster and waited by the stage door, and Glenn, Alice Riply and Alan Campbell signed it. It had been announced that 2 months later Betty was taking over the role.
I had never seen Ms. Buckley and was quite excited. I waited to get my poster framed, as I was hoping I could get Ms. Buckley to sign it as well. BIG MISTAKE. I guess I did not really know my theatre etiquitte by asking her to sign, but I might as well taken a dump and placed the steaming pile in front of her. She refused, and so then I asked her to sign the program I shelled out another $15 for. She rifled through to make sure it was hers and not Ms. Close's. She eventually made a scribble across it.
In my defense, I did see someone ask Elaine Paige to sign a show poster from Glenn Close's Los Angeles run, and it was not a problem for her. Elaine and Chita have always been the most gracious at the stage door...and I have had subsequent run-ins with Ms. Buckley (who I do still love), and though not as bad as this one, she still kind of makes you feel like it is a big imposition.
Rath - I will have to buy you an alcholic beverage of your choice so you can regale me with stories!
Row, Bitchy Buckley...
What about casting Rath's paramour as Norma?
m.e.f. - that could work...I will of course have to be her assistant...
Jim, you're on!
Wow. I'm not too etiquitte savvy either. Had it been me, I would have said, "Up your's Buckley." Updated On: 2/16/05 at 04:48 PM
I think Maureen would make an excellent Norma - wow - what a concept!
She would need a LOT of makeup...
Of course, later, I had a friend down from Boston and I took her to see Ms. Buckley at Cafe Carlyle...and we took the teacup Ms. Buckley drank out of (we still have them).
Lord in heaven. I hope you had them de-toxified. (did I say that out loud??)
ok Jim, that's a little "stalkerish"... but hey, i don't judge :)
a lot of makeup - why? Maureen is actually close to the right age Norma shouldn't be ugly by any means - thats just how some have played her - remember - she's an aging beauty queen
lol..actually mine is still UNWASHED!
My friend uses hers for paper clips, elastic, etc.
After shelling out $10 for a glass of water there before the show, I wanted a memento!
Maureen doesn't look like an aging beauty queen - just a beauty. Trust me on this - I've seen her close up (as much as I could focus on anyway)...
Adam - I'll admit it is strange...
But we had a few drinks in us at the time, and I was still a little miffed about the poster incident...
So my friend just popped them in her purse (Betty sat next to us drinking tea during the bands riffs).
