I think that when it comes to acting the role, Glen Close blows all the other propects out of the water.
She and she alone is capable of making Norma simultaneously grotesque and sympathetic. That's what's needed, IMO. As to her vocal abilities, she's by no means incompetent and with the numerous takes she'll be afforded on film, she should be able to put forth a solid vocal performance.
As for the other women considered for Norma, heaven knows I love her, but Barbra always plays Barbra. And Cher, god bless her, manages to make every song she sings sound the same.
Whenever Cher opens her mouth to sing, I can't help thinking about Paul Schaffers's wicked send-up of her trying to soulfully sing the Christmas carol, Oh Holy Night. The imitation is so spot-on that when I think of Cher the singer, I can no longer keep a straight face.

I thought Madonna at least HUMANIZED the role of EVita for the film..and didn't go on rampant rage shouting for two hours like Patti Lupone's overrated performance. The film WAS beautiful and didn't get the credit it deserved...I thought EVITA was the first true comeback musical..that opened the doors for CHicago..and now RENT.

Glenn CLose????NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Betty Buckley was truly a better Norma than Glenn, but that'll never happen.
anyone else agree out there? anyone catch Betty?
and ewan macgregor is obviously chosen cause pickings are always slim for any male hollywood actors who can remotely sing and want to go under the whipping post for doing a movie musical. ewan macgregor is the volunteering guinea pig,..as usual.

I personally don't think Glenn can sing that role - you need a Paige or a Buckley to sing it. I have no doubt that Glenn's performance, in terms of acting, will be truly extraordinary, but I do think that someone who can act AND sing is needed for a film of a musical. And Ewan - what can I say??? He is not Joe Gillis. The guy cannot sing- I thought his performance in Moulin Rouge was embarrassing, and his performance on the West end stage really is nothing special - the show would still be just as good, if not better, without him.
I think it should have been Hugh Jackman and Elaine Paige - I am extremely disappointed for them, and for the audiences.

I, for one, enjoyed Ewans' vocals in Moulin Rouge. ...and I don't care if they had to refine his vocals in the studio... because the final result was awesome to me. I remember when Whitney Houston's I Will Always Loved You was first released. People made such a big deal that her vocals were run through a computer to bring out the best sound. You know what? I didnt care then and I dont care now. When people hear that song nobody talks about that anymore...they just reminence on how great she was. Same with Sunset. Who cares if they "tweak" Ewan's (or Glenn's for that matter) voice. Years from now, people will love this movie and not care of the contreversy between Glenn vs. Patti/Betty B or Ewan vs. Hugh/Michael Ball.
I'm excited about this new musical endeavor!

This is a RUMOR per RUG. No casting has been done for the film yet.
I emailed RUG and someone else on another board did too. Same answer they know nothing about the newspaper article.
I am not sure if the film has been approved by Paramount for the go ahead.
Yours,
Carolyn

It sucks that news, like casting and production, gets announced elsewhere before it gets released on ALW's official website. It leaves a bunch of holes like who is directing and other names attached to the film.
I hate speculation.

Do you think ALW will cast the movie with the broadway stars in cameos. I would let all the women who played Norma be the nurses or put them in the production of "This Time Next Year". The men that played JOe could be the clothes shop workers or again put them in the "This Time Next Year". I just think the movie however will have the "ghost" of Gloria Swanson, and Billy Wilder. I wish them luck in the production of this movie! We all win if this movie becomes a hit! However if they would have a HUGE hit if they cast Barbra Streisand in it! Look "Meet The Fockers" wouldn't of made all that money if Barbra wasn't in it! Barbra Streisand can still pull them in! And if they want to cast a star as Joe they should go with John Travolta. Id John turns them down I would go with Adam Pascal
I wish I could sing.
